Derby Does Tutu Tuesday: A Whirlwind of Frills and Feathers

Right, lovelies, gather 'round for a peek into the captivating world of Derby's very own Tutu Tuesday! As a ballerina who’s danced her way through more tulle than I can count, I have to admit, it was a pure delight to witness the infectious spirit of this weekly tradition. I'm not just talking about those lovely little ladies twirling around, though. From pensioners to pub-goers, it seemed the whole of Derby was caught up in the charm of tutu-inspired attire.

For those of you who don’t know, Tutu Tuesday is an initiative that's been spreading like a delicious viral sensation across the globe. The idea is simple – don a tutu, whether it's a classic dance-floor darling or a cheeky DIY creation, and enjoy a day of silliness, fun and fashion. And boy, did Derby embrace the spirit with open arms (and tutu-filled hearts!).

The sight of shoppers strutting their stuff in fluffy, pink tutus with floral prints and feathered additions would have been enough to warm any ballerina’s heart. I spotted the cutest little tot in a bright, blue tutu, paired with an adorable little gingham dress, causing a total melt-down in the hearts of every passerby. Over in the market, a gaggle of middle-aged ladies were rocking full-length tutus in bold, jewel-tone hues, while some of the lads were even joining the fun, sporting miniature tutus tucked onto their waistbands! I dare say, it took an epic amount of courage for a middle-aged bloke to sashay down the high street in a pink, feathered tutu.

Tutus were not just relegated to the streets though. Stepping into the delightful "The Little Tea Shop", it felt like I'd wandered into a whimsical world of petticoats and porcelain. They were serving "Tutu Tea" which, naturally, came with a little homemade cupcake decorated with a dollop of whipped cream and a delicate sugar rose. Let's be honest, how could you not smile in a tea shop filled with frilly tutus, dainty teacups, and sweet pastries? A real dream for any true-blue #tututuesday fanatic.

Even Derby’s cultural hubs got in on the tutu action. Derby Museum and Art Gallery organised a fantastic "Tutu Tuesdays" workshop for children, encouraging the next generation of ballerinas and fashionistas to explore the power of playful self-expression.

As a seasoned ballerina and fashion enthusiast, I was struck by the beautiful array of tutu styles that made their appearance on Tutu Tuesday in Derby. We had a mix of everything from those classic, billowing, romantic tutus in elegant white to more modern designs crafted from brightly colored tulle with bursts of sparkle and bold prints. And don't even get me started on the dazzling range of headbands, feathers and glitter!

Of course, I've got to add a nod to those brave souls who opted for the more daring, DIY designs. There were tutu dresses and tutu skirts – a delightful nod to our 1980's "ballerina-inspired" fashion trends! And a huge kudos to the lads who got into the spirit and rocked some mini-tutued additions, proving that Tutu Tuesday is all about pushing those boundaries, embracing a little absurdity, and unleashing your inner "ballerina."

The true spirit of Tutu Tuesday is about breaking down barriers and finding joy in something silly and fabulous. And it seems like Derby took it upon themselves to do just that! As the day unfolded, the entire town was filled with smiles and laughter, fuelled by a collective embrace of fashion, fun, and good-natured camaraderie. From the "ballerina-themed" dance sessions held in the city centre, to the “tutu-inspired” window displays of independent boutiques and shops - Derby turned into a fairytale land of joy and self-expression.

I’m ready for the next one, Derby! You know how to spread the love and joy. Thank you, Derby. Until next time…
