Tutu Tuesday in Oxford: A whirl of tutus and twirls!
So, it’s Tuesday, and you know what that means… #TUTUTUESDAY! That’s right, the day when all ballet lovers – aspiring dancers and seasoned pros alike – ditch the usual work attire and don our tutus for a day of grace, glee, and twirling around like there’s no tomorrow.
Now, Oxford might not be the first place that springs to mind when you think “ballet,” but this university town, brimming with culture and history, has a surprisingly vibrant dance scene. And on this fine Tuesday, it was the setting for a delightful celebration of all things tutus.
As I stepped into the heart of Oxford, it felt like the very streets had embraced the #TUTUTUESDAY spirit. People were beaming with delight at the sight of fellow tutu-clad enthusiasts. From the classic, timeless pancake tutu, the epitome of elegance with its romantic tiers of tulle, to the whimsical, colourful tutus that resembled a whimsical dream, everyone was showcasing their individual style.
And speaking of style, let’s talk about tutus! Gone are the days of thinking a tutu is simply a tutu. These days, they come in all shapes, sizes, and colors – a true celebration of self-expression! A peek at the different tutu styles present gave me a sense of the individual personalities they represent.
- The Classic: A perfect portrayal of grace and elegance, this timeless design is characterized by its layers of tulle and a graceful silhouette. It has this timeless, ballerina feel. A symbol of traditional artistry, it effortlessly transcends the boundaries of age and personal style.
- The Romantic: For the dreamer and the fairytale aficionado. This tutu embraces whimsical elements, such as ruffles, lace, or even glitter. There were some really fun variations on this one, such as a dreamy soft lilac with glitter and feathers. Another was a beautiful powder blue that looked like it was woven out of clouds!
- The Bold: This is not your average, delicate ballerina’s tutu! Instead, it’s for the confident, daring individual who isn’t afraid to experiment with a dash of edge and contemporary design. The bold tutus were a riot of vibrant colours, dramatic cuts, and intricate detailing – perfect for showcasing a personality as dynamic as the dance itself. Some of my favourite bold tutus had edgy black detailing or patches of fiery red that felt like bursts of dramatic energy!
- The Custom-Made: These were real show stoppers! From individual pieces reflecting unique passions, to designs inspired by the latest trends and fashion, these personalized tutus embodied the spirit of creative expression! They were definitely the highlight of the day! I even saw one tutu inspired by the stunning architecture of Oxford University, which is brilliant, given the rich architectural heritage here!
I have to say, the #TUTUTUESDAY scene in Oxford was definitely a sight to behold. I even spotted some familiar faces in the crowd – dancers from the local Oxford Ballet company and some incredible talent from the Royal Ballet School in London!
It was truly amazing to see a cross-section of the dance community come together to celebrate their shared passion – it’s a perfect demonstration of the power of dance to unite people. A beautiful testament to the beauty, power, and joy of ballet.
