Stratford-upon-Avon: Tutu Tuesday Adventures
Hello fellow dance lovers and fashionistas! It’s me, your friendly neighbourhood ballerina, back with another dose of twirling tales and sartorial delights. Today, we’re taking a trip to the charming town of Stratford-upon-Avon, the birthplace of Shakespeare, but with a twist – a Tutu Tuesday twist, of course! #tututuesday
Now, I’ve been blessed with the chance to explore some seriously beautiful tutus this week, and let’s just say I’m completely enamoured. First stop – The Royal Shakespeare Company’s (RSC) Costume Department. This place is a haven for theatrical magic, and let me tell you, the costume team is top-notch! We’re talking exquisitely crafted garments, painstakingly detailed with every stitch, bead, and feather imaginable. The tutus alone are enough to make a dancer's heart flutter – think delicate, romantic tulles, vibrant silks, and oh-so-dramatic bodices. You wouldn’t believe the stories behind some of these pieces – they’ve danced on stages all over the world, witnessed historical milestones, and even been worn by some of the most renowned ballet dancers of our time.
Stepping into that department felt like stepping onto a set for a theatrical masterpiece. Everywhere you look, there’s a new piece of artistry – dazzling costumes, whimsical accessories, and breathtaking props. It’s an experience that truly captures the magic and imagination that make up the heart and soul of theatre. My favourite find was this one – a stunning, floor-length, ivory tutu, a veritable cloud of shimmering fabric with a hand-sewn pattern of intricate, golden floral embroidery. It looked absolutely divine – the perfect combination of classic elegance and captivating charm.
Next, we waltzed over to the gorgeous Swan Theatre. Nestled by the River Avon, this theatre is a true gem. You can’t escape the air of history, yet there's a feeling of exciting change happening. This isn't just any old Shakespearean building, oh no. There’s a buzz about the Swan that resonates with creativity, and you know, what better way to embody this feeling than by sporting a striking Tutu Tuesday outfit? My personal pick was a fiery red tutu, bursting with energy, featuring multiple layers of lightweight tulle and a simple, yet elegant bodice, perfect for dancing the night away!
Speaking of dancing, what is a #tututuesday adventure without some pirouettes? The Stratford-upon-Avon College dance studio was our final destination. Now, you wouldn't believe the talent here! These youngsters are all full of fire, energy and, of course, tutu flair! And they’re not just sticking to the classics – we’re talking hip hop, contemporary, and even ballet fused with breakdancing. So much diversity and creativity! I tried my hand at a few steps – let's just say my arabesques haven't been quite so precise after a long break. I am still on the comeback trail, I guess!
So, what’s a ballet girl’s Tutu Tuesday ensemble for such a vibrant adventure? This week, I went for a look that encapsulated both classic and modern ballet styles, which is what I think this town of Stratford-upon-Avon truly reflects. It was all about finding a balance, just like that elusive arabesque. Here’s the rundown:
- A Tutu That Tells a Story: I decided on a soft pink tutu with layers of delicate, pleated tulle. It's the kind of tutu that whispers of romance and evokes those whimsical dreams, something I found present in many Shakespearean works.
- Bodice with a Modern Edge: To bring in a little contemporary flair, I opted for a simple, black bodice with a modern cut. It perfectly balances the softness of the tutu and complements the overall ensemble.

- The Finishing Touch: Of course, what's a ballet look without a touch of artistry? A tiny red bow tied at the nape of my neck provided the perfect hint of colour, completing the whole ensemble. I think it was a total Tutu Tuesday success!
