Tutu Tuesday in Blyth: A Ballet Blogger's Take on the Trend
It’s Tutu Tuesday, and I'm not just talking about the delightful dance-related hashtag (although that is definitely worth celebrating)! No, this Tuesday, I’m specifically talking about Tutu Tuesday in Blyth – the little town that’s not only my home, but also, much to my surprise, a burgeoning fashion haven!
Now, when I say Blyth, many of you probably picture fishing boats and chip shops. Yes, that’s a big part of the town’s character, but what many might not know is that a creative, energetic, and decidedly fashionable spirit thrives right under its industrial exterior. And nowhere was this spirit more evident than in Blyth's first ever Tutu Tuesday!
Let’s backtrack for a second. I started this blog – The Ballerina’s Wardrobe – about a year ago with the aim of bringing a bit of sparkle to everyday life, blending the classic world of ballet with the latest trends, all through the prism of my very own wardrobe. While it’s definitely grown (thanks, dear readers!), I never thought I’d end up leading a full-blown tutu revolution – and yet, here we are!
So, what’s the deal with Tutu Tuesday? Well, it’s actually very simple – on every Tuesday, we, the wonderful people of Blyth, embrace all things tutu! Not literally all things, mind you, but our own little interpretations of the beloved ballet staple, infused with the personal touch of our own unique style.
It all began when I, being the proud and rather dramatic ballet dancer that I am, posted a selfie on social media wearing a pale pink tutu skirt paired with a classic black roll-neck jumper, complete with a leather jacket and ankle boots. I called it my ‘urban ballerina’ look and tagged it with the whimsical #tututuesday. And that was that. That innocent Instagram post sparked a movement!
Soon, I found myself receiving messages from complete strangers – friends, neighbours, local shopkeepers, and even some older ballet students who'd just recently retired! They all wanted to get involved! People shared photos of themselves in their own versions of the trend, their outfits running the gamut from casual, playful, and even daring, yet always remaining classy. The best part is that every outfit tells a story – it reveals who the wearer is and what their interpretation of the trend is, reflecting their individuality.
As the movement gained momentum, a new kind of spirit started flowing through Blyth. A spirit that encouraged confidence, individuality, and creative self-expression. It even had people coming into the ballet studios for their own ‘Tutu Tuesday’ photoshoot, using the class settings as the perfect backdrop for their ensemble. That, to me, is the best part. There was this feeling that even though Blyth might not be considered a global fashion hub, something truly unique was happening right here. It was almost as if the little town was quietly dancing to its own rhythm.
I'm excited to share some of the coolest, trendiest and most stylish interpretations I spotted on Tuesday:
- Classic, chic and comfy: I spotted the lovely Mary, a local baker, wearing a black, multi-tiered tulle skirt. She'd paired it with a cozy white sweater and an oversized leather tote bag – it was just the perfect balance of ballet-inspired elegance with relaxed comfort, the kind of style that could be just as at home at the ballet studio as in the heart of Blyth’s charming High Street.
- Edgy & Bold: I’m obsessed with this look! A teenage student by the name of Sarah absolutely killed it by pairing a bright red mini tutu skirt with a classic leather biker jacket, sleek black leggings, and chunky black boots – it was edgy and fun, and a testament to how the tutu trend can easily embrace any personal style.
- Colour & Whimsy: Local art student Anna absolutely brought a breath of sunshine with her vibrant green, layered tulle tutu skirt! She wore it with a boho style white blouse with intricate embroidery, and chunky metallic gold bracelets – perfect for the carefree spirit of summer!
- Grunge chic meets ballet: A local artist named Jess wore a vintage navy tulle skirt with a distressed oversized denim jacket, torn black tights and Doc Martens boots – It was grungy and rebellious, and showed just how effortlessly a classic ballet style can be embraced into an unconventional look.
- Summer Sparkle & Glamour: There’s nothing quite like some shimmer to brighten up your Tuesday, right? Lily, a fellow ballet enthusiast, donned a shimmering silver tutu skirt, paired it with a bright, floral tank top, and gladiator sandals for a cool and comfortable take on glamour, and for me, the perfect outfit to dance the night away!
- A touch of colour on the High Street: I had to give a shout-out to this group of friends. Their vibrant, coloured, mini tutus – a bright yellow, a beautiful turquoise and a striking deep purple - brought a touch of vibrant colour and joy to the everyday bustling scene of Blyth High Street. It was proof that when people come together and embrace a shared interest, even something as simple as a tutu can light up the day.
This trend is so much more than just a fleeting fashion statement, it’s a tangible manifestation of the spirit of Blyth itself – the unique, dynamic and creative vibe of this small, seaside town! Every outfit is a canvas, each Tutu Tuesday is a new opportunity to break down expectations, express our individualities, and perhaps, reclaim the ballet from the grand opera house and place it onto our own unique and personal stage.
