Tutu Tuesday in Small Heath: A Whirlwind of Frills and Fun

As a Birmingham ballet dancer and (let's be honest) tutu enthusiast, I feel compelled to document this sartorial journey – especially in the heart of our very own Small Heath! This Tuesday was a bit of a whirlwind, starting with a "Tutu Tuesday" gathering at the local community centre, a joyous explosion of tutus of every imaginable style and colour! * We had the classic "Romantic Tutu", with its layered tulle, and the billowing, dreamy silhouette, perfect for channeling the graceful swans in Swan Lake. * Then, the "Whipped Cream Tutu", a modern twist with fluffy layers, almost good enough to eat! * Not to be outdone were the “Pas de Bourree Tutus,” boasting more of a pointed silhouette, with layers of netting that allowed for intricate footwork. * The bold and vibrant “Character Tutus” also made an appearance –think dramatic and colorful with sequins, and feathers, the embodiment of the bold and energetic character roles in classical ballet. * Even those infamous "Tutus" –the shorter, more sassy version, popular in contemporary ballet, were making their way onto the scene. * Let's not forget the " Tutu-inspired outfits", where people embraced the tutu aesthetic without the full-on frills. A tulle skirt with a casual tee was a perfect example –casual, stylish and still oh so on trend! The atmosphere was electric – a celebration of tutus, and, more importantly, a celebration of Small Heath's community spirit. It felt amazing to witness the town come together, united by this playful and whimsical expression of our shared passion for dance and style! After the community centre, it was onto the local bakery – let's call it "Sweet Treats". It wasn’t only delicious pastries that caught my eye (those lemon tarts were divine), but it was also their commitment to the "Tutu Tuesday" cause. The staff, decked out in tulle-embellished aprons, had even baked a tutu-shaped cake – talk about taking the cake! Our afternoon adventure took us to the newly-opened antique shop, where a hidden gem of a tutu made its grand entrance. Tucked away amongst the vintage china and antique clocks was a beautiful “Bell Tutu" from the early 20th century – I'm talking exquisite, hand-stitched layers, delicate silk, and lace trim! This was an absolute treasure, a testament to the timeless beauty of this dancewear classic. Later on, we wrapped up the day at Small Heath's very own “Tulips,” an intimate café that embraces art, music and community – the perfect blend of creative energy and small-town charm. The café had partnered with a local dance school, hosting a tutu-inspired art exhibit that displayed sketches, photographs and paintings dedicated to this whimsical garment. The "Tutu Tuesdays" at Tulips was definitely something I'd love to do more regularly. It's so heart-warming to see small businesses get involved in our tutu-themed fun. This whole experience in Small Heath was a vibrant showcase of how something as seemingly simple as a tutu can be a symbol of so much more: unity, creativity, joy, and a reminder to never take ourselves too seriously. Small Heath is becoming a place where we can embrace the unique and beautiful in our own way. #tututuesday
