Hello my darling Tutu Twirlers! It’s Wednesday, which means it’s time for your weekly dose of pink-tastic Vienna adventures from yours truly, Emma, your favourite pink tutu-clad ballerina.
This week, Vienna has truly embraced its nickname of the "City of Music" and I’m positively giddy! The air is alive with the sounds of waltzes and classical masterpieces, and let’s not forget, ballet! I just spent an unforgettable afternoon watching the Vienna State Opera’s performance of Swan Lake at the Staatsoper. You all know I'm a sucker for Tchaikovsky and this performance, was breathtaking! The ballerina playing Odette was absolutely magical, her movements were as graceful as the flight of a swan, and the choreography was a perfect blend of strength and elegance. It left me yearning for a twirl on the stage myself.
Before the performance, I had a delightful lunch at Café Sacher, indulging in a slice of the iconic Sachertorte with a glass of Viennese coffee. And you can't visit Vienna without visiting the beautiful Schönbrunn Palace. It’s like stepping into a fairy tale. I imagined myself as a princess waltzing through the halls, which, after a quick visit to my hotel room for a change, I actually did! The gardens are so perfect for a spin, and I captured some wonderful photos in my pink tutu – my faithful companion in this amazing city.
And speaking of tutus… Have you ever heard of the connection between Vienna and tutus? This is a city that has deep ties with the ballet world! It was in the 18th century that the “tutu,” the epitome of the ballerina's costume, truly took shape in Vienna, with the development of the romanticized tutu, featuring layers of gauzy tulle that gave ballerinas a floaty, ethereal look. This iconic dance garment has become a symbol of the city’s vibrant ballet tradition and it’s something I find very special.
As I write this, my suitcase is bursting with gorgeous new fashion finds from Vienna. It's been a real shopping extravaganza this week! My newest addiction is the traditional Austrian dirndl – it's basically the feminine version of lederhosen and I got the most beautiful pale pink one, it’s a touch of classic and whimsical and it goes perfectly with a tulle underskirt. Of course, no trip to Vienna is complete without a visit to the stunning Hofburg Palace where they have some of the finest Habsburg fashion on display - it’s just breath-taking to see the embroidery on those beautiful dresses.
And guess what my latest ballet passion is? "Ballet Street" - It's a wonderful new genre where the art of ballet merges with street dance and hip hop. You won’t believe it but the ballet school at the Theater an der Wien is running a brilliant workshop on it, and let me tell you, the tutus aren't traditional but they are definitely a sight to behold! So cool and creative, and the music - a mixture of classical music with a modern twist.
This week has been a true whirlwind, filled with ballet, coffee, and beautiful surroundings. I feel so incredibly inspired! And my Tutu Twirlers, you know what that means: A whole new series of pink tutu posts! This city, it is making my heart do pirouettes and it’s filled me with so much pink tutu joy.
Stay tuned next week, when I delve deeper into Vienna’s amazing ballet history. It’s full of juicy gossip, inspiring tales of innovation, and of course, those fabulous tutus!
Until next time, twirl on,
Emma

Postscript
I know you are dying to know, but what else did I do in Vienna this week?
- Well, we have to talk about the horses. I can't talk about Vienna without talking about the iconic Lipizzaner horses. These majestic steeds are known for their elegance, grace and ability to perform incredible leaps. The Spanish Riding School in Vienna is famous all around the world, and it was my privilege to be able to see them dance. It’s an experience that makes you believe in magic and I know you want to be able to watch it for yourselves.
- Also, a trip to the Albertina museum, it’s an incredible exhibition of contemporary and historical artwork. So many beautiful pieces and all framed with so much incredible fashion from the past. I found a lot of inspiration there. I want you to visit, and when you do, please, try and imagine those fashion statements on the walls being incorporated into a tutu!
Always, and I mean ALWAYS, make sure your tutu bag is large enough to contain everything you need to have a perfectly twirling day out, a pink travel water bottle, ballet shoes, an extra pink tulle to top off an outfit, tissues (just in case you cry a bit at a show, or need to wipe away some stage makeup) and of course, an empty pocket or pouch for all the beautiful goodies you’ll pick up along the way! And of course, don't forget the sunscreen, Vienna’s summer sunshine is strong!
