It’s your favourite pink-loving ballerina blogger, Emma, checking in from the enchanting city of Vienna, Austria. This week, I've been swirling through a flurry of fairytale charm and artistic wonder, all while wearing a very special, glittery, pink tutu, of course. As always, my travel adventures are fuelled by the magic of dance, a healthy dose of Viennese waltzes, and a delightful splash of pink.
This week, Vienna has treated me to an explosion of culture and colour. Let's dive straight into it, shall we?
Wednesday, November 5th - Ballet Beyond Belief
My week began with a mesmerising ballet performance at the Vienna State Opera House. This stunning theatre, steeped in history and elegance, transported me to another era. The sheer grandeur and opulent details were a dream come true. I found myself feeling like I'd stepped into a fairytale – think sweeping staircases, gold leaf detailing, and chandeliers sparkling with an ethereal glow. And as for the ballet, it was a whirlwind of grace and artistry. I couldn't take my eyes off the exquisite costumes, the elegant choreography, and the dancers’ effortless movement. I'm definitely returning for another show during my time here.
Speaking of the costumes… let me tell you, this show didn’t disappoint in the tutufarian department. A generous amount of tutus, each one more spectacular than the last. Imagine soft tulle cascading like a gentle breeze, adorned with sparkling crystals and delicate embroidery. Honestly, my dear readers, it was tutudicious!
Thursday, November 6th - A Fashion Frenzy
A girl can never have too many pink tutus! Especially not when she’s in Vienna, a city brimming with boutique shops overflowing with beautiful fabrics and stunning designs. I had a delightful morning browsing the charming shops on the Kohlmarkt, an iconic shopping street where I found a magnificent piece of vintage pink lace to add to my personal collection – I couldn’t resist! Later, I took a charming horse-drawn carriage ride through the historic streets, allowing myself to be swept away by the beauty and majesty of this majestic city. The combination of graceful horses and pink tutu – an absolute winning combination for my daily dose of whimsical joy.
Friday, November 7th - Waltz Away Your Worries
Today was all about embracing the city's famous waltz. Vienna is known as the 'Waltz Capital of the World' and I couldn't miss the chance to twirl my way through its heart. I had a wonderful lesson at the Johann Strauss-Schule, where I learned some beautiful waltz steps under the expert guidance of a very patient, and very dapper, dance instructor. As the music filled the air, I couldn’t help but twirl and sway, feeling completely immersed in the magical atmosphere. It’s amazing how such simple movements can express so much emotion. I felt alive, and so wonderfully in sync with my surroundings.
Saturday, November 8th – A Symphony of Sound
Music is truly the heart of Vienna, and I wouldn't miss the chance to experience a live performance. I visited the Vienna Philharmonic at the Musikverein, one of the most beautiful concert halls in the world. As the music filled the space, I was mesmerized by the virtuosity of the musicians and the beauty of the orchestral masterpiece being played. It was an unforgettable experience that filled my heart with warmth and inspiration.
After the concert, I had the most delightful supper at a traditional Viennese restaurant called Zur Wienerin. I indulged in hearty goulash and some scrumptious apple strudel – both served with a generous amount of whipped cream.
Sunday, November 9th – History & High Tea
On this day, I had the pleasure of exploring Vienna's rich history and its royal legacy. I visited the magnificent Schönbrunn Palace, once the summer residence of the Habsburg dynasty. The architecture was breathtaking, and it’s a stunning testament to a bygone era. After the palace tour, I wandered through the gardens and the Schönbrunn Zoo, where I encountered adorable pandas and cheeky monkeys! A most wonderful afternoon.
Monday, November 10th - Ballet in the City
This city has captivated me with its vibrant street performances. I wandered along the Danube Canal, captivated by the sights, sounds, and colourful energy surrounding me. And to my surprise and absolute delight, I stumbled upon an amazing ballet performance! A group of talented street performers, beautifully clad in tutus (of course), were gracefully moving through the crowds, captivating the public with their rhythmic beauty. Such creativity and skill. You’ll find me seeking out similar artistic expressions on the streets throughout the rest of my journey!
Tuesday, November 11th - Reflection and Retrospection
This evening I decided to take a moment to sit back and soak it all in. I find my creativity ignited by the sheer beauty and artistry I’ve encountered in Vienna. So much inspiration to be found in the buildings, the people, and the energy that fills the city. A quick cup of hot chocolate (my favourite Vienna treat!) whilst reflecting on all the amazing adventures I've had this week, has put a smile on my face. The journey here, from Derbyshire, has been as much a delight as the city itself, as I made my way here on a wonderful journey by train! Such a great way to see the countryside, watch the world pass by and get the creative juices flowing.
This has been an incredible journey into the soul of Vienna. It's a city that effortlessly blends history, elegance, and artistry in a way that's truly captivating. I can’t help but wonder, who needs a carriage ride, or a visit to a magnificent palace when the streets themselves can transport you to an imaginative wonderland? I urge you to consider Vienna, if you haven’t already, as a truly incredible travel destination. There’s a reason this city inspires such great musicians, poets, artists and, of course, ballerinas. I have absolutely loved my time here and I know I’ll be returning soon. I’ll leave you now to pack up my pink tutu and my suitcases - and plan my next exciting dance journey.
