Vienna Waltz: A Tutu-ful Time in the City of Music (Post #1625)

Hello my darling darlings, and welcome to another adventure from your favourite pink tutu-wearing travel blogger, Emma! Today we’re waltzing our way into Vienna, the city that holds the beating heart of music, culture, and – of course – tutu history.

This week's adventure sees me flitting about the Austrian capital like a delicate butterfly, thanks to a charming performance of "Swan Lake" at the Vienna State Opera House last week. Performing the role of the mischievous swan, Odette’s mischievous little sister, was so much fun – the applause was positively deafening, and I was practically showered with roses! Of course, the performance had me swooning not just for the grace of the dancers, but also for the sheer splendour of the setting. Vienna, oh Vienna, you have truly captured my heart.

From Horse-Drawn Carriages to Train Journeys

Getting to Vienna from my beloved Derbyshire, was quite the romantic affair. As ever, I left the car in the garage and boarded the train from Chesterfield to London St Pancras – a journey filled with comfy armchairs, delightful scones, and even a charming chat with a gentleman who’d travelled from Scotland to see a show!

Of course, my final arrival into Vienna, was truly magical. The train carriage rolled slowly to a halt, revealing an explosion of pink and red blossoming trees, and the sight of the magnificent Stephansdom towering above. From there, I hired a horse-drawn carriage to take me to my hotel. Ahem, yes, you guessed right, I’m nothing if not dramatic, so a classic Vienna horse-drawn carriage was an absolute must! And believe me, it was worth every single penny!

A Tutu Wonderland in Vienna: The Shops

Naturally, when it comes to any new city, a visit to the shops is simply non-negotiable. I'm always on the lookout for that perfect tutu-enhancing outfit, especially when in a city like Vienna. My darling girls, this place is truly a dream for any ballet enthusiast!

For the ultimate in fashion: * The Schönen Wissenschaften district, home to independent boutiques, antique shops, and hidden gem fashion treasures – a true wonderland of colour, and where I nabbed an exquisite embroidered pink clutch to match my Vienna opera tutu! * The Mariahilfer Strasse: You could lose days exploring this famous shopping street. It’s a treasure trove for clothes, jewelry, and accessories.

For a touch of ballet history:

  • The Operngasse, the little street adjacent to the Vienna State Opera, is simply buzzing. This is where you'll find shops specializing in everything ballet - pointe shoes, costumes, even historical dance books. The shop I adored was called Dance Dreams. The sales assistant was a former ballerina herself – the sheer history of this place!

The Heart of Ballet: The Vienna State Opera House

Of course, I would be remiss not to talk about the jewel of the crown, the majestic Vienna State Opera House itself. Just the mere presence of this grand structure took my breath away, it’s pure theatrical enchantment. And the interior - oh my, just picture rich mahogany and velvet, the gleam of gold, chandeliers so elaborate, they could bring a tear to your eye!

My first stop had to be the Vienna Opera Museum for a little dive into the fascinating history of Vienna’s Ballet and Opera. There I learned about the incredible legacy of these performance forms, starting from their inception right up to the modern era. A highlight of my visit was the magnificent display of historic tutus. Yes, you guessed it - a plethora of pink. It was like being transported through time itself! My heart still leaps for joy at the thought!

Vienna, a Food Lover's Dream

Beyond the tutus, shopping and performances, there was food galore – an absolutely heavenly journey through Austrian delights! Imagine plates piled high with scrumptious Wiener Schnitzel, fluffy Sachertorte – and don’t forget those mouthwatering strudels!

For a delectable Viennese experience: * Café Central - It's an absolute must-do for afternoon tea! The ambience is classic and opulent, and the tea selection is superb. Plus, the pastries are absolutely divine! * Restaurant Zur Wiener Staatsoper - Right by the opera house itself, it serves up delicious Viennese cuisine. You really can’t go wrong here! My schnitzel and apple strudel combo were both outstanding. * Hotel Sacher Wien: A traditional Viennese institution. I absolutely had to experience a taste of their famous Sachertorte!

Beyond the Tutus:

Of course, it would be unfair to talk about Vienna without mentioning the magical ambience and architectural grandeur. A wander through the heart of the city is a journey back in time!

Must-See Sites * The Stephansdom: This Gothic cathedral is truly awe-inspiring – so much beauty, so much history. The view from the top is well worth the climb. * The Hofburg Palace: An entire complex filled with history! It housed the imperial Habsburgs for over 600 years! From lavish apartments to fascinating museums, the sheer scale is enough to leave you breathless! * Schönbrunn Palace: A summer residence for the Habsburgs. The Imperial Gardens are breathtaking – the epitome of elegance! I enjoyed an enchanting stroll through the gorgeous rose gardens. * Belvedere Palace: It housed the world's largest Klimt collection. I particularly enjoyed the ornate architecture and the intricate paintings – pure inspiration!

Pink Tutu Fun in Vienna

My little darlings, let me tell you, Vienna is a city that wears its elegance like a second skin! I just had to get a snapshot of me in my new pink tulle skirt and embroidered clutch by the glorious Stephansdom – pure magic, wouldn't you agree?

And of course, it wouldn’t be a proper Vienna adventure without taking a spin on the carousel at the famous Prater amusement park. You've guessed it, I’m wearing my full pink tulle skirt, twirling with abandon underneath the sparkling lights. After all, life is all about those little, carefree moments!

And before I say goodbye, I do want to share with you something wonderful I stumbled upon. In one of the shops, tucked away on the edge of the Mariahilfer Strasse, I found an exquisite vintage pink tutu with shimmering beadwork and an incredibly long train. I purchased it immediately! It’s practically begging to take center stage on my website, in a new blog post of course.

Well, that’s all from my little corner of Vienna. Remember to join me next Wednesday on www.pink-tutu.com, for an exciting adventure from Paris! Until then, stay glamorous, stay twirling, and remember – the world needs a touch of pink tutu magic!
