Christmas Ballet in 1970

Pink Tutu Post #79: 1970: A Whirlwind of Christmas Ballet! πŸ©°πŸŽ„

Hello my gorgeous little twirling snowflakes! It's your favourite Derbyshire fairy, Emma, here, ready to whisk you back to a time when bell-bottoms were all the rage and disco fever was just starting to heat up. But even back in 1970, Christmas meant one thing – ballets! β„οΈβœ¨

This year marks a truly spectacular journey through Christmas ballet history. Let's strap on our sparkly pointe shoes and dive right in!

Firstly, let’s get one thing straight, darling: in 1970, pink tutus were EVERYTHING! I mean, can you imagine? Imagine those shimmering layers of tulle in a delicious shade of flamingo pink. Sighs dreamily. I just picture myself as a ballerina from 1970, whirling around a stage in a voluminous pink confection! πŸŽ€

Now, onto the magical shows of the season! In 1970, the Royal Ballet's Christmas performance was The Nutcracker! (Spoiler alert, this ballet just never goes out of fashion.) Can you imagine seeing the Sugar Plum Fairy dance amidst the glorious Christmas tree backdrop, while the audience cheers for the brave nutcracker prince? Simply enchanting, right?

And speaking of charming, 1970 saw the first ever ballet performance by The Royal Ballet School! Imagine a world full of young, budding ballerinas and their captivating steps. Honestly, it brings tears to my eyes to think of their talent shining bright. πŸ’–

Now, what about fashion? Oh my darling, you’d have simply adored the styles of 1970. A bit of an explosion in everything bold and bright. Think billowing velvet skirts, playful patterns, and just a dash of sequins - perfect for a festive night out! If I were to time travel, I'd pack a fabulously long velvet coat, some oversized hoop earrings, and, of course, a pink sequined bag to carry all my ballet treasures!

My favourite bit about fashion in 1970? A nod towards a bit of flair in the ballet itself. No longer just the traditional tutus! We saw ballet costumes embrace a slightly more free-spirited and expressive side, even going so far as to use bold, patterned tights as part of the dance! What’s not to love? πŸ’–

Did you know, my darling, that a Christmas show for all the family called "A Christmas Carol" debuted in 1970? A charming tale about love, forgiveness and second chances. Imagine watching Scrooge in all his glory, transforming right before your eyes on stage! Absolutely fabulous! πŸ’–

Oh, and you just have to check out Rudolf Nureyev as Prince Siegfried in Swan Lake! He danced with such passion and grace, a true epitome of beauty and ballet mastery. Watching him soar through the air was absolutely mesmerizing. ✨

Oh darling, the excitement! 1970 was a year brimming with amazing shows, fashionable ensembles and heartwarming tales. I’m dreaming of donning a lusciously pink tutu, dancing under a cascade of sparkling lights and watching some magical performances - all for a wonderful Christmas ballet adventure! πŸ’«

Now, who else is thinking pink this Christmas? πŸ’ Don’t forget to comment below and let me know about your favourite Christmas ballet memories. Until next time, keep twirling!

Love always,

Emma πŸ’–

(P.S. don't forget to check out my street performance this month on December 19th at London's Covent Garden - I'll be performing some of the famous choreography from this year's Swan Lake, dressed in a glorious pink tutu - you know I love a classic! I promise a fun show. Oh, and please feel free to dress in your best festive outfit too!)
