Hello darlings! It’s your favourite tutu-wearing time-traveller Emma here, ready to whisk you away to the shimmering world of ballet in 1971. Get your fanciest Christmas-themed pink tutus ready because this trip’s a real cracker!
As a Derbyshire girl born and bred, Christmas has always been a time of cosy fireplaces, mince pies, and magical moments. But even the most festive of festive traditions can’t beat a classic Christmas ballet. So, grab your steaming hot chocolate and let's take a trip to 1971. I’m certain a vintage Christmas tutu or two will make its way into this post – don't worry!
This year, it’s all about capturing the spirit of the times. Think big, bold colours and flamboyant movements. The mood of the decade is optimistic and full of youthful energy, reflected perfectly in the choreography and fashion choices. And let's face it, that's what Christmas is all about!
Ballet Fashion 1971 – A Celebration of GlamourOh darling, where do I even start? 1971 was an absolute dream for ballet fashion! The world of ballet saw the rise of Margot Fonteyn’s breathtaking designs – her artistry is just… sublime. You've just gotta love a tutu that speaks for itself – like a piece of art!
Picture this: sleek black leotards paired with flowing chiffon tutus in bold colours, reflecting the colours of Christmas like a twinkling ornament. There were flashes of sequins – shimmering like snowflakes catching the stage lights. And, my dears, the tights? Perfect. Just the right amount of nude, hugging the leg in that way that only tights can! Rudolf Nureyev, a ballet star I have to admit to swooning over, looked just as fabulous!
Streetwear fashion was no less dazzling. Think bright prints, psychedelic patterns, and a generous dose of glam – perfect for a night out at the ballet! Even the everyday attire – like flowing skirts, trousers with wide flares and chunky boots, screamed style!
London’s Biggest Ballet BallForget your modern Christmas tree! I'm talking real, proper pine trees and glitzy baubles. And of course, The Royal Ballet held its most elegant, glittering, ball – all in the name of a glorious charity fundraising effort for The Royal Opera House. It was quite the glamorous event, darling, just as dazzling as a snow-covered Christmas landscape! I wonder if I can persuade my friend in the future to take me, I know some beautiful tutus would go beautifully in the festive lights!
And don’t forget the Royal Ballet’s Nutcracker at Covent Garden. A truly majestic spectacle, packed full of festive joy. The production was nothing short of a magical journey for the entire family – think shimmering snowflakes, enchanting toy soldiers, and a cast of colourful characters, like the Nutcracker himself! And what's a Nutcracker without the iconic sugar plum fairies, waltzing in their beautiful, colourful costumes!
But London wasn’t the only stage humming with festive cheer! The Sadler’s Wells ballet, with their charming rendition of "The Sleeping Beauty," gave audiences a beautiful fairy-tale escape that left everyone buzzing with wonder.
Beyond The Festive SeasonChristmas may be the pinnacle of joy and cheer, but that’s not to say there weren't other sensational events captivating ballet fans throughout the year. Margot Fonteyn, the absolute icon of dance in my mind, captivated audiences across the globe.
Of course, we can't forget Nureyev, the man, the myth, the legend, always a thrilling sight in his elegant leotards.
The Pink Tutu Way of LifeMy darlings, as always, remember: Christmas is all about spreading joy, sharing a little sparkle, and making a bit of a glamorous statement! This year's fashion is a fabulous blend of bold colours and vintage flair – perfect for any Christmas ballet or festive event. Don’t forget, embrace the pink tutu attitude – and embrace life with the joy, warmth and glitz of Christmas!
This season, my time travel took me back to London and Derbyshire – all those wonderful historical towns and villages. It’s been absolutely fabulous and it reminds me that there's no place quite like home. But the magic doesn’t end there! My love of history and my ballet tutus has been a fantastic experience. Next time you find yourself staring at a beautiful old building, take a moment and imagine the incredible events that unfolded in its history. You might find yourself in a magical ballet in an instant – maybe even one like the incredible ballet events of 1971!
Until next time, darlings,
Love and pirouettes, Emma x
