Pink Tutu Time Travels: September 9th, 1911 - A Whirl Through Ballet History (Post #3009)

Hello my darling readers! Welcome back to Pink Tutu Time Travels. It's Emma here, back from another thrilling adventure through the history of our beloved ballet!

Today, I'm galloping back to a shimmering September 9th, 1911, my magical pink Shire horse, Meg, snorting softly as we arrive in a whirlwind of pink and glitter. Meg, bless her golden hooves, is feeling quite the showstopper today. Even she’s decked out in a tiny, glittery pink saddle and a matching feather boa - after all, it’s all about pink and sparkle in the Pink Tutu Time Traveller’s world, isn’t it?

But where in time did our magical journey land us this time? Why, right in the middle of an era when the world of ballet was abuzz with creativity and excitement. We’re back to a time where new choreographic styles were emerging and ballet was being reborn as a powerful artistic force.

Now, let me take you on a whirlwind tour through the ballet world of 1911…

London's Royal Ballet Buzz: A Tale of Two Ladies

Stepping onto the London stage, we find a captivating world of classical ballet, all thanks to the brilliance of two ladies, both icons of the dance world! First up, the legendary Madame Adeline Genée, the Danish ballet dancer who made the world swoon. She was considered the epitome of elegance and grace, her name a whispered legend in the hallowed halls of dance. And she's not just a dancer, but a star with a bright light on the theatrical stage too, having taken part in a performance of “The Merry Widow”. Oh, what a talent she was!

Next, let’s salute another true inspiration: Madame Anna Pavlova. A Russian beauty with a touch of magic, she captivated audiences with her ethereal grace, a ballerina who truly embodied the spirit of romanticism.

In fact, Pavlova herself is busy performing right now - she’s dazzling the audiences with the enchanting story of ‘Giselle’ at London’s Coliseum. It's said that her performance as Giselle was absolutely unforgettable, her grace and tragedy blending beautifully into a theatrical masterpiece.

It's no wonder the whole city's talking about Pavlova and Genée. These dancers were true luminaries in their field, shaping the very essence of ballet for future generations to admire!

Paris: A Ballet Metropolis of Innovation

Our next stop takes us to the beautiful City of Lights – Paris, a haven for the innovative and daring, especially when it comes to dance! And what are they up to in this charming Parisian haven? Why, more ballet of course!

There’s the captivating “Pavillon d’Arménie”, which I am quite excited to add to my repertoire of must-see shows - a dance performance brimming with beauty and captivating storytelling. What a treasure trove for a ballerina to find herself in!

But let's delve deeper into the ballet scene and appreciate what makes Paris so unique – it's a city embracing the revolution of the ballet. Here, a group of talented dancers known as “Les Ballets Russes” are causing a stir, experimenting with fresh styles that are completely shaking up the dance world. Imagine that – bold movements and daring innovation all within the magical realm of ballet!

As the time-travel dust settles, I realise this era is bursting with fresh ideas. The dance world is in a thrilling stage of transition, paving the way for the amazing ballet world we know today.

A Blast From the Past: Fashion Spotlight

While our world was about twirling in tutus, what were ballerinas in 1911 dancing in? Well, let’s just say fashion was undergoing a revolutionary change, leaving behind the corsets and embracing more flowy, comfortable silhouettes! It was a period of elegance, with long flowing lines and an emphasis on simplicity, perfect for both performance and a touch of everyday chic.

Of course, for the dancers, it was about beautiful and functional dancewear – soft and supple fabrics, beautiful colours, and most importantly, the ability to move gracefully. We’re talking beautiful tulle, graceful skirts, and dresses with the freedom to soar across the stage. This period saw the emergence of innovative, free-flowing dance costumes that became synonymous with ballet as an art form.

I simply adore how even today we see those influences in our modern ballet attire. The way some of the more recent designs reference a simple era makes me want to twirl around for hours!

Pink Tutu Time Traveller’s Must-Haves

Now, what can you imagine a time-travelling ballerina needs in her back pack for a trip through time?

I’ll tell you. Mine's stuffed with these beautiful treasures: a few extra tutus – you never know when a special occasion calls for a new one – along with some antique ballet shoes and some original handwritten notes from a ballet performance I discovered, along with some original dance manuscripts that capture the heart of the era.

Every treasure I pick up is a little piece of history that inspires me. The ballet stories I discover make me excited for each adventure I get to experience, and of course, every little piece reminds me of why I travel through time.
