April 4th 1859 - A Leotard Fashion Fix

Hello, lovelies! It's Emma here, your time-travelling tutu-tastic blogger! Get ready for another fabulous fashion journey back in time. This month we're going back to 1859, and oh my, it was a Leotard Lovefest. Buckle up for some real pink-tastic style!

My Pink Tutu Travels:

It's hard to believe that today marks the date when I set off on my latest magical leotard journey. As always, my faithful pink sparkly time-traveling leotard was shimmering under the Derby moonlight, waiting to take me back in time.

I swear, sometimes when I get on that leotard and journey through the years, I can hear that familiar twirl-inspiring soundtrack – a blend of tinkling bells and playful harps, making me feel like a fairy princess embarking on a very important mission - and of course it is! Spreading the Tutu Love all across the ages, naturally.

Today, we're landing in 1859 - and I must say, the fashion landscape was starting to heat up, ladies! As I spun through time, I could feel the excitement building! There was something in the air - something oh so fashionably charged!

A Look At Leotards in 1859

The late 1850s were a pivotal time in the evolution of the leotard, a true statement of femininity. Think form-fitting, delicate, and utterly romantic. Imagine silk, velvet, lace, and of course, a whole lot of colour – with hues like the most decadent sunsets. There were vibrant red velvets, buttery yellow silks, and stunning sapphire blue lace – a real burst of glorious fashion that mirrored the Victorian Era's passion for beauty and exquisite detail.

Now, 1859 saw a surge in popularity for the "French Corset" and its elegant companion, the "Staylace". These essential undergarments gave shape and a touch of alluring structure to the figure, and they played a crucial role in enhancing the elegance of leotards during that period.

This French corset, with its beautifully-worked bones, was an embodiment of the era's emphasis on feminine elegance. It was so sophisticated that it truly deserves its own special place in the history of lingerie!

Now let's imagine this! I could picture myself wearing one of these French Corsets - paired with my own bespoke tutu, naturally - a piece that perfectly captured the time period's aesthetic.

This would have made my 1859 silhouette both refined and feminine, perfectly reflecting the era's beauty standards, a statement of classic elegance, even as I gracefully navigated the bustling London streets in my sparkling pink leotard.

It was almost impossible not to dance with every step! It's no wonder they call it 'Fashion Fever'. This historical time just crackled with a magnetic energy - and with it, a fashion buzz that still resonates through time.

A Leotard Shopping Spree in 1859 London

Being in London, I just had to pay a visit to the esteemed Peter Robinson’s Department Store. Located in Regent Street, this emporium was at the pinnacle of Victorian fashion! And you can't miss the stunning building, boasting five floors and brimming with all the latest fashion creations, from the very finest French Corsets to elegant silk dresses.

Stepping into that beautiful store was an overload of the senses - a kaleidoscope of silks, lace, sparkling fabrics and of course, those oh-so-sophisticated ladies adorned in their leotards!

And let me tell you, ladies, Peter Robinson's leotards were something else! Exquisitely cut, designed to flatter, and in such captivating shades of crimson and jade – all meticulously stitched by hand, a true celebration of fashion and craft. I couldn't resist purchasing a few beauties - after all, how could you turn down such a splendid opportunity? I mean, this is historical fashion we’re talking about here!

London's Ballet Theatre Scene

Once I'd finished my shopping, I ventured to Covent Garden - home to the London Ballet Theatre! What a place - buzzing with an electrifying energy. There, underneath those majestic crystal chandeliers, I watched a show. I found myself completely entranced by the breathtaking choreography! The dancers were so skilled, their movements as graceful and graceful as the swirls of smoke from a dancing flame!

One performance that really stole the show involved this very dramatic "Tragedy Queen" ballerina. Imagine her in a velvety black leotard - completely enveloped in elegant fabric – with the soft glow of candlelight highlighting every movement, making her every graceful twirl and elegant plié even more stunning. Talk about making an impression - you couldn't take your eyes off of her. She moved with such a confident, elegant poise that I wanted to learn from the masters!

Now you know I had to put my leotard through its paces in Covent Garden too - what else? A few impromptu spins amongst the crowds! I did keep things very ladylike, of course! A few pirouettes, a couple of elegant waltzes – that was more than enough to turn a few heads. Let's just say I made quite a grand entrance!

A Pink Tutu Legacy:

As I embarked on my journey back to the future - to my own time - I knew that I would bring back these precious 1859 leotards - such beautiful and sophisticated pieces! These were my mementos from a captivating voyage through history. The French Corsets, a nod to timeless elegance, would take pride of place in my wardrobe - adding a touch of vintage glam to any ensemble!

There’s no denying the enduring appeal of leotard styles from that era, their charm and elegance. So much so that today's modern designers are now paying homage to this by-gone era by reinterpreting these beautiful, traditional looks for contemporary wearers. It is proof positive that fashion is, in many ways, timeless - especially leotards - the styles can evolve and be tweaked, but there’s no doubt they have an eternal magnetism!

Until next month, stay twirly!

Love, Emma.
