Post Number 657: A Pink Tutu Whirl Through Time – September 1913

Hello darlings, and welcome back to my little corner of the internet! I'm Emma, your time-travelling tutu enthusiast from Derbyshire, and this month I'm taking you all the way back to September 1913 – just imagine! This was before the First World War, before flappers danced the Charleston, before everyone in the world was wearing pink tutus, though I'm working on it!

A Trip Through Time

This month, my sparkling pink time-travelling leotard whisked me back to an era when ballet was slowly shedding its formal, courtly style and evolving into the exciting and dynamic form we know today. I landed in Paris, where the heart of the dance world was beating with a newfound energy. It was thrilling to step into a time of bold new creations.

A Peek into Paris

I was straight to the Théâtre du Châtelet to witness the premiere of the ballet “The Rite of Spring”, which ignited controversy when it was first staged. But for me, it was a joyous spectacle of avant-garde movement and bold expression – a far cry from the more classical ballets that reigned in previous decades. This piece pushed the boundaries of traditional ballet with its primal energy, and the leotards worn by the dancers were just as revolutionary, a departure from the classic, billowing tutus of old. Think tight-fitting, earthy colours, and a freedom of movement that spoke of a changing artistic landscape. It was an amazing opportunity to see a moment in time where dancers weren't afraid to express themselves in new and captivating ways.

On The Trail of Leotard Evolution

I ventured out to see what else was brewing in the world of dance and discovered that Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes were all the rage. This legendary company was performing the iconic “Petrushka”, a delightful piece that features captivating colourful costumes and expressive movement that tells the story of a puppet’s longing for freedom. I was completely mesmerised by the dancers' artistry, and it was a joy to see how leotards and costumes played a crucial role in enhancing their performance and capturing the spirit of the story.

From Stage To Street

My Parisian exploration led me to a local dressmaker's shop, where I found myself surrounded by beautiful fabric and delicate lace. It was a world away from the modern-day sports-focused fabrics of today, but still brimming with inspiration. This glimpse into the dressmaking techniques of the time was a real treat, and I’m adding this knowledge to my next batch of leotards for my performances.

Of course, no trip through time is complete without a little ballet shopping. I was particularly charmed by a charming Parisian shop, "Au Bon MarchĂŠ." It boasted a stunning collection of silken fabrics perfect for adorning dancers' leotards, and I even spied some exquisite lace and velvet trim that would look stunning on a vintage-inspired ballet costume. And of course, I couldn't resist grabbing a few delicate velvet ribbons, the kind that would transform my trusty pink tutu into a masterpiece!

Finding The Perfect Tutu

My hunt for the ultimate pink tutu brought me to an old dance supply shop where I fell head over heels with the vintage dance costumes. I even found an old pink satin tutu from the era that needed a bit of TLC. The shopkeeper assured me it would look gorgeous once restored. And she's right - the moment I stepped into it, I felt transported back to the Belle Epoque. And it goes without saying, it will be a perfect addition to my pink tutu collection, and the next must-have item for my performances!

My Take Away From This Time Trip

The 1913 experience has reinforced my deep love for ballet history and inspired a brand-new look for my performances. I will incorporate more delicate embellishments, vintage detailing, and maybe even a touch of velvet to capture the essence of this beautiful time. As I twirl back to my own time, I want to leave you with a question to ponder: Why do we find leotard fashion so captivating? Perhaps it’s the effortless elegance or maybe it's the expressive potential. Whatever the reason, it’s clear that the world of ballet and leotard fashion is alive and evolving, and I, for one, can't wait to be part of it.

And remember, darlings, my aim is for the world to be painted pink - and I won't stop until everyone is twirling in a pink tutu!

Until next time, keep twirling!

Emma
