Pink-Tutu Blog Post #706: 10th October 1917 - A Blast to the Past in a Pink Tutu!

Hello, lovely leotard lovers! Emma here, your pink-tutu-clad time traveller, back with another thrilling tale from the world of fashion history. This month, I've whisked myself back to 10th October 1917, and oh, what a whirlwind of vintage leotard styles it's been!

You see, I have this magical pink sparkling leotard, the kind that shimmers with every twirl and brings the magic of time travel alive. It’s like stepping into a fairytale! As soon as I put it on, I’m whisked away, leaving the hustle and bustle of Derbyshire behind. Today, I landed right in the middle of the world's bustling theatrical scene, a perfect time for exploring the latest and greatest in leotard fashion!

As I danced through the cobblestone streets, I spotted posters plastered on lampposts for performances at the Coliseum Theatre in London. This venue was, and still is, a cornerstone of theatre history. They were showing "A Daughter of the Gods," a musical filled with fantastical costumes, dazzling lights, and you guessed it… the leotards! I had to see this!

With my sparkling leotard catching every eye, I stepped into the theatre. And what did I see? Beautiful dancers adorned in dazzling leotards - but with a twist! These leotards were far from the minimalist and sleek ones you see today. Think velvet, tassels, layers of intricate beading, and even sequins - think a bit of glitz and glam with an opulent Victorian flair!

While we may not wear leotards this ornate nowadays, I have to say, I am absolutely loving the playful combination of fabrics and styles. There's a unique allure to their vintage appeal, and seeing it firsthand at the Coliseum Theatre in London made my heart skip a beat. The performers were radiant and the leotard designs felt as fresh as ever!

My time in the past also involved an afternoon spent shopping in the beautiful shops of "Harrods." Can you believe that this iconic store was only a mere decade old back then? Inside, I was blown away by the exquisite selection of fabrics and haberdashery – enough to inspire a lifetime of leotard creations! I found an absolute treasure trove of silk satins, fine lace, and beads – materials fit for a princess!

Imagine me, in my bright pink tutu, flirting with the fabric and colours. It was a sheer delight! It’s so fascinating how fashion changes over time – I am utterly inspired by how we've evolved. What's even more inspiring, though, is that some fashion styles like leotards, have stood the test of time, forever reminding us of the beauty and joy of movement and expression.

As the day faded into the London twilight, I hopped on a vintage bus, watching the street performers, who were wearing dazzling outfits, including the fabulous leotard, strut their stuff. I was in awe, seeing how they managed to mix fashion, street theatre, and ballet into their routines! It really gave me new ideas to spice up my street ballet routines.

With the clock ticking, it was time for me to return to the safety of the present day. And even though my trip through time was a fleeting one, the stories I found tucked away in the corners of the past sparked new ideas and passion in me.

I know you're thinking - “Where did she get the money for all this travel?" Well, that's where the magic of street ballet comes in. My daily routine is a vibrant mix of spreading my pink-tutu passion and, yes, funding my travels through performances. After all, who wouldn't stop to admire a pink-clad ballet dancer gracefully swirling and leaping around? The world is my stage!

But enough about my adventures – I'd love to hear from you, darling! Tell me about your own leotard love affair! Have you seen a piece from a specific era that sparked joy and inspired you? Which historical fashion trend from the past could you see working in modern leotard designs? Share your thoughts and dreams – let's celebrate all things leotard and spread the pink-tutu magic!
