Post #707: The Great Pink Tutu Quest! - November 11th 1917, a Day for Dancing!

Hello lovely readers, it's your favourite Derbyshire lass, Emma, here with another installment of my time-travelling adventures, brought to you courtesy of my shimmering pink leotard and the magical, twirling power of pink tutus.

Today's date, the 11th of November 1917, took me on a whimsical journey to a time of captivating creativity, and some rather interesting fashion choices - a true kaleidoscope of sartorial delights, as always! My destination: London, 1917!

Now, my lovely readers, you all know how I absolutely adore leotard history and fashion, and today I found myself swept back in time, to a period when fashion and the performing arts were undergoing a transformation. While 1917 saw the world embroiled in war, dance and its associated attire remained an undeniable force, influencing the very fabric of everyday style!

Let's have a proper look at how London was buzzing on this day in leotard fashion history:

A Whirlwind of Tutus and Leg-of-Mutton Sleeves:

I, of course, dressed in my finest sparkling pink leotard. You know how much I adore pink! It felt just the right level of sparkly, with its shimmering sequins, a perfect contrast to the grandeur of Victorian elegance that still lingered. It felt wonderfully whimsical against the sober atmosphere of the times. I went to the Empire Theatre for a night of captivating spectacle! A real treat for the eyes and soul, believe you me!

In this elegant theatre, I saw dancers taking the stage in stunning, yet more demure, outfits, compared to today. Think layered tulle tutus in shades of muted pink and cream. This was, after all, still very much a time of Edwardian influence. But oh, how the change was coming! I noticed hints of new energy in the performance! And in the ladies' fashions: silhouettes were evolving towards slimmer, looser shapes with shorter skirts.

I even managed to pop into a theatre shop, what a delight! The window display boasted leg-of-mutton sleeves in rich brocades and luxurious fabrics. I couldn't resist buying myself a pair of shimmering blue opera gloves to match my shimmering pink leotard. How elegant!

Dance Lessons and Dazzling Glamour

Speaking of change, ballet was having its own makeover. The "legit" styles of traditional ballet were finding fresh expression through the rise of more expressive, less constrained dance styles. That night at the theatre, I was fortunate to catch the vibrant, exciting artistry of the Diaghilev Ballet. What a captivating show! These dancers pushed boundaries in innovative costumes, incorporating more vibrant colour and bold design elements into their look. Talk about a true burst of fashion evolution! Theirs was a celebration of body and motion, and their stage attire was as much about that as the dance steps!

On the streets of London, meanwhile, fashion embraced a wartime chic, with a sense of practicality and a more relaxed, yet elegant, mood. But there were signs of fun too, as women experimented with longer lengths and new colours - think pale blues, pale greens, lavender, and my absolute favourite, pink! They looked radiant! Even with their sensible hairstyles, they looked wonderfully stylish, confident, and empowered. They made the most of their fabric rations with the clever use of trims and embellishments to elevate even the simplest garment. A true lesson in elegant practicality, just as a pink tutu enthusiast like myself needs!

It wasn't all elegance and restraint, though. While some embraced the 'utility look', others craved escapism, opting for bolder choices with more flamboyant fashion details. As for me? I definitely embraced the colour pink with all my heart and found joy in expressing myself with a generous helping of glitz! You never know when you might encounter a time machine, do you?

Lessons From A Bygone Era

I can tell you this: even when the world felt bleak, people continued to seek beauty and creative expression in fashion, just as we do today! It's about being bold, daring, and always aiming for a little sparkle. And I’m all for it! I learned from those dancing ladies of the past that sometimes, all you need to bring joy is a twirl of the tutu. What an inspirational journey this has been.

My friends, let's embrace that spark of joy with each other, celebrate the vibrant tapestry of fashion, and embrace a touch of pink in all its dazzling glory.

This November 11th 1917, reminded me how a beautiful dance, a perfect leotard, and a pink tutu can change the world! Let’s get twirling, my friends!

And as always, if you wish to share your favourite fashion memories, thoughts on tutus, and how you'd like to bring the world of the pink tutu into your lives, I'd be delighted to hear from you. Until next time, keep your skirts flowing and let your inner pink tutu goddess shine.

With love and a twirl, Emma
