Pink Tutu Travels: Post #1537 – January 1st, 1987

Hello my lovely readers! Emma here, and this month’s journey takes me to… well, nowhere specifically, but let me tell you, it was quite a day!

It all began, as it so often does, with a twirl and a sprinkle of magic. You know that glorious feeling, when you slip into your pink sparkle leotard and it’s like your whole world gets a dose of pixie dust? Well, imagine that feeling magnified tenfold, because that's what happens when I'm getting ready to time travel.

My latest mission is to inspire the whole world to embrace the pink tutu, one fabulous twirl at a time! Now, I know some of you think pink tutus are just for fancy ballet performances, but let me tell you, they're a versatile, stylish, and joyful addition to any outfit, be it streetwear or a formal event. This month, I wanted to get a feel for what the leotard scene was like in the 80s, and you've got to believe me, there was a lot happening!

Imagine this: I'm twirling through the streets of London, feeling the chilly air on my face, watching people rush by with their practical, sensible coats. I felt the need to inject some colour into their day, so I stopped on a busy corner, gathered my skirts, and performed a brief yet dazzlingly pink, joyous sequence! To my delight, everyone stopped and watched with wonder. A few even had a bashful smile. Who would've thought that a bit of pink could bring a smile to so many faces?

Speaking of smiles, the world of leotard fashion in January 1987 was pretty delightful! In the ballet world, the hottest trend was the découpage leotard – those beautiful, intricate designs were so captivating, I could have spent all day gazing at them. They seemed so intricate and beautiful, like tiny works of art made from shimmering fabrics and intricate patterns.

Let's talk dance trends: On this very day, the Bolshoi Ballet premiered a spectacular new production of La Sylphide. The main dancer wore a shimmering, pale pink tutu with stunning feather details, which I must recreate as soon as I get back to my Derbyshire atelier. And for the stage costumes? Oh my goodness! Think neon-hued leotards paired with sleek leg warmers and dramatic makeup.

On the street, the leotard wasn’t quite so widely adopted. Instead, think tights, stretchy leg warmers, and colorful patterned leggings - so many textures and patterns to enjoy! And of course, no street fashion was complete without a good old-fashioned bomber jacket! Even back then, they loved layering and combining different styles, a sentiment that rings true even today, with the explosion of "athleisure" in the 2020s.

Now, I know what you're thinking, "But Emma, how can you time travel?" It's a secret, darling, but I'll let you in on this much - it all has to do with this extraordinary, pink sparkle leotard. This is no ordinary leotard! It's more like a vessel for time-traveling shenanigans! (Of course, it goes without saying I can’t reveal my exact method or magical ingredient, now could I? But I can say that I fund my travels with street performances! My pink tutu may be a sparkly spectacle, but it is my own brand of hard work, a bit of whimsy, and some of that good old fashioned Derby charm!

While you're exploring the magical world of pink tutus, be sure to visit the delightful vintage clothing shops. Back in 1987, you could have found a spectacular selection of shimmering, silky fabrics that will set your heart alight! Imagine those lovely, soft, silky, stretch fabrics, so perfect for dancing or just looking your best while you shop for a gorgeous new vintage pink tutu.

Let’s wrap up our trip down memory lane. Remember, pink tutus can be your gateway to the world of creativity and expression! So don't be afraid to embrace the joy of colour and sparkle!

Until next time, keep twirling and let your inner pink tutu shine,

Love,

Emma
