This month's time travel will take us on a whirlwind tour of global dance trends, exploring the vibrant world of leotards and finding out just what was the 'must-have' for dance fashion back in February 2020. My dear friends, let’s get ready to time travel!

A Time-Traveling Pink Tutu Blogger? It's All a Bit Magical, Really…

Oh, and for those of you who are new here - I'm Emma, your resident pink-tutu wearing, time-traveling, leotard enthusiast. I hail from the beautiful Derbyshire countryside in England, and I'm completely smitten with anything and everything dance-related.

I get my funds for all this fantastical time travel from my street ballet performances. Don’t worry, I’m not talking breakdancing in a street corner here - my street ballet is far more elegant! Think beautiful ballets performed in open air, or in iconic city landmarks! You can say I’m always busy making the world a more beautiful and colourful place!

Of course, a bit of glitz and glamour helps! That’s where my sparkling pink leotard comes in - my magic ticket to time travel! The moment I slip it on, I'm swept away to whatever date and location I desire, with the ultimate aim to make everyone see the wonderful world of pink tutus! (I may have a tiny obsession).

So, settle in darlings, grab a cuppa (and perhaps a piece of your favourite cake!), because we’re off on a sparkly, twirly adventure!

The Global Dance Scene in February 2020

Imagine my delight! When I zipped back to February 2020, I found a dance scene teeming with excitement and diverse styles!

In New York City, ballet companies were taking the world by storm with incredible new productions, and I got a chance to see a mind-blowing performance of "Romeo and Juliet" – oh, the emotion, the passion, the romance, and the incredible costuming! Every dancer looked so chic in their black and white leotards. The elegant black leotards paired with the dramatic white tutu and white mesh overlays created an unparalleled visual effect. You simply have to experience it!

The world of street dance was also on fire, with Hip Hop reigning supreme! The sheer energy, the creativity – it was electrifying! And, of course, breakdancing was booming! Imagine dazzling moves performed by incredibly skilled dancers – with a vibrant mix of modern, hip hop, and street inspired leotards!

The trend was very much all about athleisure! With the sporty leotards featuring stylish details, such as graphic lines and panels that flattered every figure.

The leotard styles I found on street dancers were so vibrant and colourful – think bright yellow, electric blues, and intense purples – and I even caught a glimpse of some wonderful pink ones, of course! It's a colourful world, darlings!

The ballroom dancing scene in London was in full swing, with new dances like Bachata capturing hearts across the globe. Even then, leotard trends had taken a whimsical twist - ballroom dancers sported intricately beaded leotards, often featuring long, dramatic sleeves - perfect for those romantic waltz sequences.

Meanwhile, in Paris, contemporary dance was going from strength to strength, pushing boundaries and leaving audiences mesmerized. The modern aesthetic in contemporary dance extended to leotards as well - think minimalist, sleek designs, with soft hues, and even the use of breathable fabrics – perfect for showcasing the incredible movements of the dancers. I even got to see some incredible contemporary pieces by world-renowned choreographers, and the leotards used in their performances truly echoed the elegance and flow of their choreography.

I can't mention the world of dance in 2020 without mentioning the power of social media, darlings! It’s no wonder, you can now see these incredible styles of leotards from anywhere in the world. It’s like having a front row seat to all the latest dance trends, from street performances to the most elegant performances on a grand stage.

Speaking of which, darlings… how about we step inside a theater and see what other dance fashion trends were buzzing on February 2020!

Inside the Theaters: What's Hot in Leotards

It was February 2020, and ballet, still the heart and soul of the dance world, had some really amazing things going on.

Here’s the thing - when it comes to ballet fashion, nothing beats the classic black leotard for elegance and simplicity! You've got a beautiful clean line to show off those incredible pirouettes! Imagine dancing with confidence and poise, knowing you’re wearing something so elegant and iconic! I mean, even back in 1850, this little number was a staple on the dance floor. In fact, its origins can be traced back to dancers such as August Vestris, who opted for a comfortable and practical outfit – paving the way for the classic dance leotard that we know and love today.

It is truly remarkable that this design, centuries later, continues to stand the test of time! A testament to how elegance can endure! However, it’s not always all about black leotards - classic dancewear with an updated look also enjoyed the spotlight in 2020. I saw ballet companies use a variety of colours to give traditional leotards a bold and contemporary twist, such as the classic pink leotard, a colour we both love! Think deep plum, royal blue and rich burgundy, and even a beautiful light pink, giving these ballet performances a subtle and delicate charm! It’s not always about bright colours; sometimes, it’s those softer hues that add a touch of sophistication!

Leotard Styles in 2020

Oh, I had such fun exploring the world of leotards in 2020! From the minimalist lines to the intricately embellished designs - it was like being in a dance fashion dream. Let's have a look at some of the highlights of February 2020:

  • Sleeveless: Simple and classic. I found a wonderful array of colours, including royal blue, forest green, and classic black, but my absolute favourites are pink of course, from pale blush pink to a stunning cherry red pink!
  • Long-sleeved: These added a touch of sophistication to many of the ballet and ballroom performances. A lovely elegant alternative to a traditional leotard, perfect for creating graceful lines.
  • Halter neck: A playful and sophisticated look, which you could find in so many styles from bold, graphic designs to those elegant and minimalist designs, perfect for any modern dancer.
  • Open back: Ooh, such a dazzling, glamorous style! Just perfect to show off that elegant ballet line or showcasing those ballroom spins.
  • High neck: Ideal for both the ballet studio and performances. It really brings out those flowing lines and makes the whole look feel more sophisticated.
  • Body suit: A definite staple in contemporary dance. These figure-hugging numbers not only offered flexibility but looked absolutely fabulous. There was an amazing array of designs and colors - bold colors, beautiful intricate patterns – so much to discover, you know, you need so much space to fit all your wardrobe choices in!

    The Rise of Athleisure:

Speaking of dance fashion and flexibility, Athleisure in 2020 was definitely here to stay, offering an irresistible blend of sportiness, functionality, and chic fashion! It’s the perfect way to blend ballet styles, and those fabulous streetwear looks. I’ve definitely found some great pink tutus from the Athleisure trends - pink tutus and trainers are now a winning combination!

In February 2020, Athleisure leotards came in various styles. Think fitted, racerback tops, complete with sporty mesh panels - just what every street dancer or ballet enthusiast needs. The stretchy material allowed for optimal comfort and freedom of movement. These leotards even paired up beautifully with bold sneakers, or even chic high-tops - giving off a cool, effortless vibe, but keeping that stylish touch!

It was an era when you could literally hop out of the dance studio and strut onto the streets – that was a huge fashion highlight! So, no more juggling multiple bags of clothes or frantic changing sessions after rehearsals, the dance community just blended effortlessly between styles! I love a good seamless fashion journey, don’t you?

Embracing the Beauty of Variety: More than just Leotards

There’s so much more to dance fashion than leotards, and as I toured the world, it was clear that these accessory pieces were making a huge splash in 2020:

  • Tutus: Well, darling, how could I resist, these exquisite creations were out in full force! From the romantic, airy tutus with fluffy layers that added an extra element of magic, to the bold, minimalist tutus designed to highlight a dancer’s movements, these pieces were pure theatre!
  • Tights: No leotard is complete without a matching pair of sparkling, brightly colored tights - think turquoise, vibrant blues, and rich greens! Imagine these little gems perfectly complimenting a dazzling leotard - oh so pretty!
  • Warm-up Jackets: Even dancers need to stay cozy! These elegant pieces were spotted in studios, and some had those amazing designs on the backs, such as colourful butterflies or delicate floral patterns. Perfect for when a dancer needs a break after a particularly intense pirouette!

And it doesn't end there! The ballet accessories scene had so many exciting and eye-catching elements. I spotted elegant scarves fluttering during rehearsals - such a beautiful way to add a touch of softness and flair to a dance look. I also came across a couple of sparkly hairbands - it seems those little additions of sparkle just make you feel that extra bit special!
