This month, my time-traveling leotard has whisked me to August 2023 – a glorious era of fashion and fierce, independent spirits! My, my, but it's thrilling to see what leotard designs are being embraced across the globe!

And as always, my dazzling pink tutu is packed and ready to flutter across continents. After all, what's a fashion adventure without a dash of pink? 😉

I had to do a double-take when I landed in Paris, where I discovered a stunning revival of leotards paired with vibrant skirts. Think sparkly sequinned minis twirling with a timeless leotard for a glamorous evening look, and bold statement colours paired with classic black for a playful touch on the streets. Parisian chic meets ballet grace - what a delightful mix!

Over in New York, it was all about sporty practicality. Leotards, particularly the flexible and functional kind, are making their way onto the yoga studio scene in all their colourful glory. But that’s not all – cycling wear has embraced the leotard silhouette for maximum stretch and style.

London, oh, London – always ahead of the curve! The London Fashion Week runway is buzzing with leotard inspired looks. The designers are taking the classic lines and giving them a modern spin, whether it's with slinky, bodycon leotard dresses or architectural layers and bold cut-outs for a truly contemporary statement.

And it wasn't all about runway and street trends! The dance world is flourishing! I stumbled upon an incredible modern ballet piece at Sadler's Wells Theatre that had me mesmerised. The subtle play of textures and colour within the leotard and tights designs truly made the choreography come alive. And of course, I saw a bevy of vibrant tutus taking centre stage!

I also caught the Royal Opera House in a beautiful performance of Swan Lake. The romantic, flowing tutus paired with the classically fitted leotards made my ballet-loving heart skip a beat! It reminded me why I love travelling through the eras – seeing how dance and leotards continue to enchant and evolve.

As a little Derbyshire girl with big dreams of ballet and sparkle, I've always been drawn to the history of dance and leotard fashion. It’s a story that spans centuries, woven together by the threads of creativity, tradition and sheer daring.

This month, my research took me back to the early 20th century, to the legendary dancer, Anna Pavlova. She revolutionised ballet with her grace and delicate movements. Can you imagine how dazzling she looked in her custom-made layered, diaphanous tutus? I've seen them in the archives - they're breathtakingly elegant and inspire every contemporary tutu designer!

Another fascinating moment from leotard history came to light during this trip through time: The invention of Lycra. This magical material changed the game in the 1950s. It provided unparalleled stretch and freedom of movement – the perfect fabric for dancing and acrobatics. Can you imagine attempting a pirouette in stiff cotton? No, thank goodness for Lycra!

And then, I had a particularly thrilling encounter with a young, aspiring ballerina named Martha Graham. I watched her practice in her simple black leotard and bloomers, and she spoke so passionately about pushing the boundaries of dance, about expressing herself through movement, about storytelling through the leotard.

The 1940s and 1950s were the age of the “modern” dance movement, where women like Martha, alongside her colleague, Hanya Holm, became pioneers in incorporating expressive elements like powerful movements and daring leaps, a far cry from the classical ballet traditions of Pavlova's era. They redefined dance with their athleticism and grace and even redefined the “dance” leotard with their practical, durable styles that offered the flexibility required for their dance choreography.

Of course, no time-travelling ballerina would be complete without a little street performance to keep my magic sparkling! This month, my troupe of tutu-wearing dancers (we're all about inclusivity - it's pink, not just for ballet dancers!), performed in the vibrant streets of Lisbon. It was pure joy to spread the joy of dance and leotard fashion. People couldn't help but smile, and for a moment, everyone joined us in the waltz!

Later that evening, we hit the dazzling nightlife of Rio de Janeiro – think rhythmic samba and leotards shimmering under the South American moon!
