Pink Tutu World: Blog Post #101: "Cosmic Twirls and Intergalactic Glitz!"

Hello, my darling Tutu-ettes!

Welcome back to Pink Tutu World, your weekly dose of tutus, travel, and the sheer joy of twirling! It’s Wednesday, which means it’s time for another fabulous blog post – and trust me, this one is a real corker.

This week, I've been flitting about the cosmos, making new celestial friends and spreading the gospel of pink tutus to every corner of the universe. It’s a busy, glittery life I lead!

Time Travelling to 1997…

Today, I’m taking a bit of a detour back in time. I'm channeling my inner time-travelling ballerina, hopping into my trusty spaceship, and teleporting to a date that holds a special place in my heart – April 2nd, 1997. Why 1997, you ask? Well, let's just say it was a truly iconic year for both the world of ballet and the fashion scene – and wouldn't you know it, those two things tend to be very, very dear to me!

Back to the Future…of Fashion

Okay, so April 2nd, 1997 – what's so special about it? For me, it’s a date etched into my memories thanks to the release of the phenomenal “Spice World” film. We're talking the Spice Girls, darling! And for a fashion-obsessed tutu enthusiast like me, well, the fashion was pure perfection! Imagine: bold colours, platform shoes, sporty crop tops, and oh my, the hair! (The less said about the actual "fashion" in the film itself, the better…but that's just me.)

The film came out a couple of months before the girls released their massive hit "Wannabe", and it’s that song that gets me absolutely buzzing. There’s nothing quite like blasting those tunes on my spaceship while twirling in my pink tutu – it's simply pure magic!

A Fashion Flashback…to Fashion…on the Ballet Stage

Speaking of pure magic, this particular date – April 2nd – also saw the start of a truly fabulous production at London's Sadler's Wells Theatre. Yes, darling, "The Sleeping Beauty" by the glorious English National Ballet was hitting the stage – a stunning piece with sumptuous costumes and the most breathtaking choreography you can imagine! This was ballet at its best. And honestly, my heart nearly exploded with excitement.

The most spectacular element? Those costumes, oh my! I'm talking grand tutus in the most stunning hues – and let's not forget the iconic and utterly romantic pale pink costume worn by Princess Aurora. Honestly, I could barely contain myself! If there's anything I love more than a good pink tutu, it's a glorious tutu with intricate embroidery, a beautiful swirl of tulle and an absolute mountain of sparkle! The detail! The artistry! Simply divine.

Now, you all know my motto: "If you can twirl in it, you can wear it!" And what better way to celebrate the dazzling world of ballet and its exquisite costumes than with my own signature touch of pink tutu magic, darling? After seeing the Sleeping Beauty, I just had to try on a tutu myself, and that's how the “Pink Tutu” became synonymous with my ballet love!

Ballet’s Impact on the Fashion World

The fact is, ballet and fashion have been linked for decades. It’s a historical bond that goes back to the late 17th century, back to King Louis XIV and his royal court. Ballet was so embedded in the fabric of society back then, with tutus making their first glorious entrance into the fashion world! It was during that era that fashion became intertwined with performance. Talk about a timeless love affair!

The Timeless Tutu…And a New Year

I'm going to give you a quick recap of tutu history, in case you didn't already know. Those first iconic ballet skirts were just called “tuniques” and were much closer to modern-day dance trousers than a classic tutus. It was the ballerina Marie Taglioni, way back in the 1830s, who famously designed the tulle, calf-length “Romantic Tutu,” a lightweight confection that allowed her to float across the stage. From then on, tutus have been a central feature in ballet fashion and are now regarded as iconic wardrobe items. The story of the tutu is the story of dancing, of storytelling and movement…it's the history of performance!

And here's the thing, my Tutu-ettes, even in 1997, when the world of fashion was filled with its own exciting trends, it was ballet that still played an essential part in shaping fashion itself. It's almost impossible to talk about tutus without talking about the impact they had, and continue to have, on the world of fashion – especially now. Just think about those amazing pouffe dresses and tiered skirts…a direct link to the gorgeous shape of those ballerina tutus. There’s a definite line to be drawn. We can thank the balletic beauty of tutus for those glamorous fashion trends.

I even remember wearing one of the big poofy “babydoll” dresses with chunky platform boots, all thanks to those “Spice World” influences…in the most fabulous shade of pink, of course. It’s like, everything came together! The pink tutu fashion, the “Spice Girls” aesthetic…it was simply fabulous!

Planet Earth...Always Inspiring!

From 1997 to 2023, we've travelled quite some time on our trip into the cosmic dance world, but, hey, that's just what we do here on “Pink Tutu World”! I adore travelling in time and experiencing the magical evolution of dance and fashion. As for me, I'm a planet Earth gal, a proud daughter of Derbyshire, with my heart rooted in the Earth.

But here's the thing: no matter where I go in the universe, my inspiration comes from right here on Planet Earth!

I love that my little pink tutu journey started here, back on good old Planet Earth.

And speaking of home...it's about time I put on my pink tutu, blast “Wannabe,” and make a little celebratory dance here at my space station! Who’s ready for a twirl?

Catch you all next Wednesday for another journey through the intergalactic universe of dance!

Much love and endless twirls,

Emma xx
