Hello my dearest Tutu-Twirling-Treasures!
Welcome back to my weekly dose of all things pink, fluffy and fabulous! This week, we're jetting off toâŠwait for it⊠drum roll⊠PLANET EARTH! Thatâs right, my loves, itâs time to dust off those cosmic glitter shoes and trade the interstellar sparkles for a touch of earthly glamour!
This past week, my spaceship, âThe Twirling Comet,â touched down in a little corner of Planet Earth called Derbyshire, England. Now, I know what you're thinking: âDerbyshire, Emma? What on Earth?!â đ But let me tell you, this English county has a heart of gold, not to mention some stunning countryside views and hidden artistic gems!
My mission this week: to explore the ballet scene of this little corner of Planet Earth. You know I'm obsessed with exploring all kinds of ballet - from the grandest of grand operas to the smallest, most intimate community performances. And of course, I couldn't resist dipping my toes (literally!) into the tutu history of this beautiful county.
Let's rewind back to my landing on October 29th, shall we? It was a crisp autumn morning, the air tinged with the scent of fallen leaves. The scenery was breathtakingly idyllic; think rolling hills, charming cottages, and a hint of that classic English countryside charm. But donât worry, I wasnât about to let myself get caught up in the pastoral peace just yet! My priority was to get dressed!
As always, I opted for an outfit that was equal parts sophisticated and sparkling. You see, I like to sprinkle some intergalactic pizzazz onto any occasion! This time, my chosen ensemble was a confection of cotton candy pink: a flowing tutu, naturally, with a bodice adorned with holographic sequins that glittered with each movement. I paired it with a cherry red satin jacket that cinched in at the waist, giving my look that classic English flair.
You can't talk about Derbyshire and ballet without mentioning the Derbyshire Dance Centre. Imagine, my lovelies, a beautiful building housing an enchanting ballet school dedicated to fostering the talent of aspiring dancers, with everything from traditional classes to contemporary dance! Now, thatâs something worth travelling for! I made it my first stop, naturally.
And speaking of ballet! Can we talk about tutulisation? You see, as any self-respecting tutu enthusiast knows, a good tutu story is as much about the history of the outfit as the history of the ballet itself!
You see, tutus haven't always been the fluffy show-stopping spectacles they are today! They've had a journey all their own - from their humble beginnings as modest white skirts to their evolution into the extravagant creations they are today. It's all a tale of fabric, form, and the evolution of the dancer!
At the Derbyshire Dance Centre, I had the chance to delve into this tutu-riffic history! I discovered that even here on Planet Earth, tutus have had their own moments of ballet-tastic revolution! Imagine, in the early days, ballets were performed with long flowing gowns - the epitome of elegance but, I must admit, not the most dance-friendly attire!
In fact, it was during the Romantic ballet era of the 19th century that tutus took flight, so to speak! As dancers began exploring more graceful, light-footed movements, the costumes evolved too! Enter the romantic tutu â light, airy, and, above all, flowy!
This is where the real fun began! As dance forms evolved, so did the tutus. There are countless types - the classic, the Romantic, the tutu Ă la Française, the demi-tutu and my personal favourite - the petit tutu. Now, my lovely dancers, just imagine a delicate cloud of tulle that barely reaches the knees, but radiates with its ethereal elegance. Oh my tutu goodness, itâs a sight to behold!
During my trip, I delved into the archives and discovered that even on this planet, tutus were not only a dance essential but became a symbol of revolution. For instance, back in the 1950s, when the iconic Russian ballerina Maya Plisetskaya dared to perform in a costume designed by the famous couturier Christian Dior - gasp! - it was met with some resistance! You see, traditionalists on this planet were deeply attached to the traditional forms. However, the flamboyant designs and bold colours that Plisetskaya wore brought a new kind of energy and flair, making waves in the ballet world. And it just goes to show, tutulisation, like all things in life, is all about pushing the boundaries and challenging the norms, right?
Of course, my journey in Derbyshire wasnât all ballet and tutu-tastic discoveries. Itâs always lovely to indulge in the little joys that earthly life offers. For example, a delightful cuppa in a local cafĂ© (served with the classic, perfectly brewed English tea), the sheer joy of shopping in the charming boutiques, and the sheer joy of sourcing some local crafts from artists who truly make the world a more beautiful place!
Speaking of local crafts, you simply have to try the Derbyshire Oatcakes. Imagine a thick, savory pancake made from a simple blend of flour, water and oats. They're a classic of Derbyshire, usually served warm and spread with butter or a bit of jam. I can attest to their deliciousness!
While I was exploring this beautiful part of Planet Earth, I stumbled upon the local theater, which was hosting an evening performance by a group of talented young ballet dancers.
The show itself was captivating. Watching those dancers effortlessly glide across the stage, their movements as fluid and elegant as a flowing river, filled me with so much joy! And, my lovelies, it brought back a wave of memories. I can remember the first time I felt the magic of dance flow through my veins â a little girl in my hometown in England, twirling and leaping with unbridled joy, dreaming of a life of pirouettes and grace!
But this wasn't your average local theatre show - they brought a unique blend of modern interpretation, classical technique, and even a touch of comedy. You see, my darlings, itâs important to have a bit of fun with it, no? Donât take it too seriously. Remember, life is meant to be enjoyed!
Oh, and they had this magnificent ballet teacher who was so full of passion, dedication and charm! Her enthusiasm was infectious, making each and every performance captivating. Honestly, this little performance in the heart of Derbyshire reminded me why I am so passionate about ballet and why I love to spread its beauty to every corner of the universe.
So there you have it, my darlings! A trip to planet Earth - full of cultural explorations, a journey back to the roots of ballet, a bit of English countryside charm, and, of course, a generous serving of tutu-ific delights.
As always, Iâd love to hear all about your latest tutu adventures - what ballet performances have you been captivated by lately? Are there any ballet-themed events that are getting you excited? Or maybe you've even discovered some hidden tutu gems of your own! Don't forget to share your thoughts in the comments below.
Now, as the saying goes, âIf you want a little joy, a little beauty in your life, wear a tutu.â And for next week's adventure - letâs just say weâll be heading to a very special, very fashionable corner of Planet Earth. Youâll want to stay tuned!
Remember, weâre all about making the universe a more sparkly and joyful place! Spread the love of dance, the love of pink, the love of tutus and, most importantly, have a fabulous time!
Until next Wednesday, Love and twirls,
Emma xo
