Pink Tutu World: Planet Earth Edition, Post #269 - 2000.06.21

Hello darling tutus!

Welcome back to my weekly Pink Tutu World, beaming directly from Planet Earth, or "Earth" as it's called in the local vernacular.

It's a Wednesday, the day for my earthly blog posts, and the sunshine's positively shimmering today! It's so beautiful I almost feel I should be twirling around in my pinkest tutu. And perhaps I will! Just for you, my fabulous Pink Tutu World readers.

This week's post is all about my recent journey to… drumroll… Planet Earth! Yes, believe it or not, this cosmic dancer is actually a native of this very planet, but like a ballerina who’s discovered a new step, I've been flitting about the galaxy for the past few years. My interstellar adventures take me to distant planets, where I spread the love of ballet, twirling through time and space in my shimmering pink tutus.

As an Earthling born and raised in the delightful county of Derbyshire, England, (with its rolling hills and charming villages, so picturesque, don’t you think?) I still consider it my base camp for Pink Tutu World HQ. And yes, the pinkest, most exquisite tutu-sourcing opportunities abound!

How did a girl from Derbyshire get into space? Ah, well, let's just say that ballet wasn’t the only thing my grandmother encouraged me in, (though you should see my heirloom collection of tutus!). My family history includes a slight lineage of eccentric, pioneering inventors. So, as my spaceship landed smoothly in my garden, you could say I inherited my knack for exploration. (You'd be surprised at the number of my "great-aunts" who were also amateur rocket engineers).

But enough of the past – I have much more exciting stuff to tell you!

First, about this amazing, incredible, fabulous day. The date is 2000.06.21, the day I witnessed the launch of the "Spirit" Rover to Mars! My gosh, the rocket flames, the roaring engines, the sheer power of sending a little space explorer across the vast void - utterly magnificent! It took my breath away. I must say, my friend, I have an irrational adoration for the wonders of scientific advancement. It's akin to the perfect en pointe leap! It sends a thrill through me! I hope to someday design a tutu that shimmers in space, perhaps using the very light emitted by distant nebulae...

I did just happen to find the most gorgeous vintage Dior suit with an absolutely magnificent lavender hue that I'd picked up at a rather exclusive shop in Notting Hill, and which perfectly coordinated with my very pink tutu, you know! Of course, I couldn’t resist grabbing some extra sequins (lavender, naturally!) to complete my space-age glam ensemble! It wouldn't do to meet a Martian ambassador without the right look, right?

Now, back to ballet… This week, I went to a performance by the Royal Ballet! I am smitten with their performance of ā€œSwan Lakeā€. Absolutely heavenly! As the danseur leapt with such graceful, swan-like abandon, I couldn't help but think… How can the Earth's gravity manage to hold these wondrous beings down?!

And did you know Tchaikovsky's ā€œSwan Lakeā€ had its world premiere on March 4th, 1877, in Moscow! My Tutu Time machine is dying to explore the elegant world of late 19th century Russian ballet! The beautiful dresses, the rich decor, the opulent stages - pure magic. And imagine… it was around the same period the world was entranced with the invention of the telephone, too. Talk about two game-changers!

It really makes me think… the evolution of tutu design alongside our understanding of the universe… the evolution of human expression in motion, the vast and ever-expanding world of technology… isn't that what really makes the heart beat faster?

There is something undeniably majestic about the journey from the graceful ballet arabesque to the telescope’s embrace of the cosmos... I feel, dear friends, it’s almost a cosmic dance in its own right!

While we're on the subject of dance history...

Did you know the earliest known "ballet slippers" (a form of ballet shoes!) were actually sandals made of fabric and rope in the ancient Egyptian Empire way, way back in 2500 BCE! The evolution of ballet shoes and the evolution of spaceships are strangely entwined, aren’t they? Two very different journeys of incredible feats of ingenuity! And guess what! Just the other day I was perusing a vintage antique market in that delightfully eccentric, yet beautiful Notting Hill when I stumbled across an exquisitely elegant, ivory-hued ballet shoe crafted from pure, ethereal silk dating back to the early 19th Century. The history of fashion is just so divine and romantic, especially when it's entwined with such beauty and elegance as the art of dance, isn't it?!

Now, speaking of tutus… I simply must mention the amazing, dazzling tutu exhibit I went to yesterday. "The Art of the Tutuā€ in London!

There’s this phenomenal museum I absolutely adore - the Victoria & Albert Museum. Imagine the sheer opulence of a full-length tutus exhibition! There were the magnificent, feathery tutus from ā€œSwan Lake,ā€ to ā€œSleeping Beauty" – some absolutely mind-bogglingly elegant creations. They even had The Ballet Dress (c.1939 - 40), designed by the great Cecil Beaton, that he designed for the Royal Opera House (and no doubt was very glamorous for it, you see!) Oh, and guess what amazing piece of tutu design they had on display, dear readers? I just knew they had it. The Tutu Designed for ā€œGiselleā€, 1841 by Marie Taglioni! Imagine. That beautiful, iconic design, more than 150 years old, with the romantic grace of tulle and ribbons. It just… fills me with such inspiration!

I think you’d be happy to know that the museum curator is thinking of starting a special exhibit focused on *Pink TutĆŗs from Across the Cosmos… * How's that for an exciting prospect?! They wanted to include the best of the best from around the galaxy. And I’m proud to say I will be featuring some perfectly gorgeous pink tutus from my personal collection! It's an honor. (More on this when the exhibits open!)

Speaking of ā€œopen,ā€ā€¦

Remember when I mentioned my favourite *vintage shop in Notting Hill, *"The Serendipitous Seamstress" ? Well, they’re going to start carrying some *special-edition Pink Tutu World tutus exclusive to their shop. Can you believe it?!

I will be making the journey back to Notting Hill this weekend to get everything prepared! We’ll be doing a special Pink Tutu launch (and no, it will not be lavender hued, just… you know… the very *pinkest of pink… just like the Tutu World logo, with the glitziest, shimmeriest accents ever!).

There will also be a Pink Tutu fashion show at the Serendipitous Seamstress. So if you are in the area in this time period, you must, must join me! I know it’s all about spreading Pink Tutu love to the whole Universe, and this is the perfect occasion for us to show our tutus! We’ll be posting the details on my social media, and of course, the pink-tutu.com website, in the coming days.

The Universe is full of love and fun – so spread the pink!

See you next Wednesday with a new pink adventure…
