Pink Tutu World: Ballet on Planet Earth – Episode #501 - 01st December 2004

Hello, my darlings! It’s your favourite Pink Tutu Princess here, ready to regale you with all the latest and greatest from my latest intergalactic adventures. Now, settle in, grab a cuppa and a scone (or a latte and a croissant – I'm not one to discriminate!), and let's take a twirl through the week that was…

Oh my gosh, you wouldn’t believe what happened this week! This Earth gal, absolutely brimming with enthusiasm (and sporting a pink tulle frock that wouldn’t quit!), decided to ditch her spaceship for a proper old fashioned train journey to London.

Can you imagine, my lovelies? I spent a full two hours in a rickety old carriage chugging through the English countryside! Now, I must confess, I had my concerns about whether my tutus would stand a chance against the rather... shall we say, un-chic surroundings. I mean, who hasn’t had the misfortune of sitting on their perfect tulle masterpiece on a train, only to find it covered in a delightful sprinkle of soot from the coal engine?

Honestly, it was terrifying. I actually considered stuffing my beautiful tulle creations into my rather impressive – I'm very proud of it – vintage carry-on luggage which I've aptly named “The Duchess." The Duchess has quite the history and could hold the most extraordinary of things, believe me! Thankfully, I've been using the magic word “Tutu" to my fellow passengers and somehow, with the flick of my pink feather boa, I managed to commandeer the entire compartment into my own personal pink paradise! They all sat like good little bunnies (although one chap did try to explain to me about 'timetables' - what an absolute nightmare!), and allowed me to arrange all my tutu treasures with absolute aplomb.

As soon as I arrived in London, I dashed straight to the Royal Opera House. They were presenting ‘The Nutcracker’ for the festive season, darling, and oh, how it brought the magic to my very soul! The staging was divine! The dancing, just exquisite!

The opening scene took place in a snowy Russian drawing-room, just as Tchaikovsky imagined. The little girl Clara had the most beautiful dress - like an angelic, fluffy white ballet tutu, complete with ribbons! All the 'little mouse' and 'soldier’ puppets danced on strings in an elaborate, intricately woven ballet that was almost a theatrical masterpiece. It was absolutely breath-taking! You could have heard a pin drop – and there was not a single tutus amongst them!

Then the most exquisite music and ballet dancing filled the stage and I felt myself transported, lost in a magical ballet wonderland with fairies, the magical nutcracker and even a real life Christmas Tree. And what an unforgettable show it was, my loves. As always, I’m all about the tutu action, and the dancing by the ballerina fairies was a sight to behold. Oh, they were wearing a myriad of the most exquisite ballet tutus, all designed in shades of silvery blue and pearl grey. Simply divine. Just divine, darling.

The fairies danced through the air like ethereal little ballerinas – their movements were a vision of grace and lightness. I confess, I spent the whole performance daydreaming about creating my own magical fairytale tutus for my own performances and workshops. It really had me in a tutu-ific mood!

Now, speaking of ballet tutu heaven, I just have to show you the divine collection of vintage ballet shoes and ballet tutu accessories I unearthed during my London spree. I’ve always got my eye out for vintage tutus – they’re simply unique, my dears. Imagine, wearing a piece of history! There's something truly wonderful about seeing those old tutus, their faded glory and whimsical faded colours – they have such history. Just imagine all the beautiful dance moves those delicate fabric tutus have been witness to. All that time dancing across stage, captivating audiences from a long time ago. Simply magnificent! They give you a real glimpse into the lives of ballet dancers and how it all started! Just gorgeous, my dears, simply gorgeous.

Before I tell you about my magnificent purchases (oh, the delights! The lace! The embroidery!), let’s not forget about this week’s tutu inspiration!

This week, the muse of pink-tutu has landed firmly on the story of the incredible tutu’s of Margot Fonteyn, one of the world’s greatest ballerina’s! Margot was just a small girl from England when her destiny to dance took her from Derbyshire - just like me darling! (Funny how we are from the same planet, huh?) Anyway, she became one of the leading ballerinas in the twentieth century and was known throughout the world for her grace, artistry, and pure beauty. And to make this ballet love even more special, guess who designed the tutu for one of her most famous ballet performances? None other than the world-renowned designer Cecil Beaton. Oh my god, imagine wearing one of Cecil Beaton's tutus - you'd be the most divine ballerina on earth, and in this intergalactic realm too! You just know the little green men would go mad for the designer elegance of it all, if they had a clue what they were looking at.

But back to Margot - a true icon, she performed with every great choreographer and had such a dramatic style that it influenced everyone who watched. When I saw footage of Margot and her incredible artistry, it made me realise the importance of what we ballet dancers and tutus can achieve together. It gave me such a warm, fuzzy feeling to see how tutus are essential for showing your character, your emotions and that timeless grace we feel and strive for.

I truly believe that dancing is the language of the universe and with every tutu creation and every tutu performance I am a testament to Margot’s genius! It is so easy to feel a little lost sometimes when your heart is full of dancing and a love for your pink tulle frocks - and what an inspiration to see a brilliant woman so many years ago. It's good to know that women like Margot have paved the way for girls like me - to do what we love and not let go!

So, with that little bit of inspiration flowing, let’s get back to my purchases. Oh, my lovelies, I don't want to keep you in suspense! Firstly, the pièce de résistance - a vintage pink silk tutu. It is simply divine. It is from the 1920s, which you just know means I am channeling some serious vintage style. It's a pale pink – the perfect shade to match my own ballerina hair – and its just about ready to go to the dressmakers – all ready for some magical transformations in my Pink Tutu studio.

Next, darling, oh my God next! The dressmakers in London, oh my goodness! As soon as I mentioned I was a ballet enthusiast they whipped up this beautiful creation for me, with delicate shimmering tulle layers. Honestly, you could almost hear angels singing the minute they showed it to me! It's a pale grey - perfect for this festive season - with silver lace embroidery that twinkles and shimmers with the slightest movement. The perfect choice for a special ballet event - and darling - trust me – I will let you know the full story when it makes its debut on the Pink Tutu World website, which, of course, will be at the next big intergalactic ballet competition – that’s my promise!

Of course, a real Pink Tutu enthusiast has to keep things classic, my lovelies - and what's classic and timeless, but an absolute bargain? A beautiful pair of white ballet shoes. I bought them from a shop on Brick Lane. Oh the treasures they had!

They have a vintage, well-worn elegance. You know I couldn't resist those beautiful ballet pointe shoes – all soft, pliable leather ready for a whirl! I felt quite giddy when the shop assistant, said - “you go, girl!”. It just made me think I'm on the right path and I've chosen the perfect tutu mission. That’s why we do what we do, right? To inspire and be inspired. I truly feel like I am fulfilling a mission from the very pink universe. To put all the dancers of the galaxy in the pinkiest, fluffiest tutus that anyone has ever seen!

But back to my pointe shoes, darling! You can't get that same ballet style and grace without a pair of classic pointe shoes, can you? What can I say? I am quite addicted to ballerina beauty and to finding unique ballerina tutus - so be sure to check in next week! I promise to fill you in on my adventures and the divine treasures that await me! And let me know your latest ballet finds. If it’s tutu, you know I want to hear about it.

Love and pink twirls, Emma
