Oh darling, you won't believe what happened last week! I was off on another whirlwind adventure, but this time, it wasn't in the stratosphere – I was back on dear old Planet Earth, specifically in my very own county of Derbyshire!
As you all know, I’m obsessed with pink tutus – they’re my signature, my happy place, and frankly, the best way to see the universe (trust me, you can get them custom-made for your intergalactic journey).
But sometimes, there's nothing like getting back to your roots and reminding yourself where your passion for all things ballet truly blossomed. And, to be honest, the ballet scene on Planet Earth is thriving – especially here in Derbyshire.
Now, if you think all we do here in Derbyshire is sit and sip Earl Grey while we knit woollies and watch the sheep graze, think again! I'm here to tell you that we've got a vibrant arts scene, packed full of fantastic venues, thriving ballet schools, and an incredible history of dancing, stretching back centuries.
I mean, just imagine: we're talking about the birthplace of some of Britain’s most iconic ballerinas!
Derbyshire – a ballet history you won’t believe
Firstly, let's rewind the clock a bit: The birthplace of modern ballet, you see, is right here in dear ol’ Blighty. The first Ballet Master of the English Royal Ballet (yes, I know it's called The Royal Ballet these days) was, funnily enough, a chap named John Weaver. Now, you may not know his name, darling, but trust me – he’s a legend in our world.
*Weaver was born right here in Derbyshire – * in 1673 – so, basically, a very long time ago! He helped to pioneer English ballet and is a massive figure in our history.
* Derbyshire's ballerinas!*
There are SO many Derbyshire-born dancers and choreographers, too. Let's talk about Alicia Markova, one of the most important dancers of the 20th century, and who just so happened to be a Derbyshire girl, born in the little town of Cheam.
She made her first appearance in London in 1924. She danced alongside one of Britain’s most famous dancers – Dame Margot Fonteyn! You know, that was the inspiration behind "The Royal Ballet," with that "Royal" in their name! It wasn’t called that when it first started out, darling – but *Margot Fonteyn's * presence, her incredible grace, talent and presence on the stage changed that. Now they have to have "The Royal" in the title. She’s a star – an absolute legend. It's just amazing to know that someone like her hails from my home county.
But darling, Derbyshire is not all about past greats – the dance scene is flourishing right now. We're seeing some incredible new talent blossoming here – like Daisy May Edwards a budding ballerina with all the potential in the world, and she also hails from Derbyshire! I’m definitely keeping an eye on her. You know she'll be the next big thing.
And when I'm in Derbyshire, my schedule's always jam-packed with dance-related activities!
But first – shopping!
We need to be looking our best. Of course, as a ballerina, the most important element is a fabulously chic pink tutu! Luckily, Derbyshire has some truly delightful boutique stores that will make any tutu-loving gal swoon. Let’s just say that there was an abundance of tulle, glitter, and those fabulous ballerina shoes – the sort that every dancer dreams of! I was especially excited to pick up some vintage lace detailing. Darling, it's all about the details, isn't it? You have to find the unique little touches.
And for all those chic looks to dance the night away in, Derby has some simply fabulous dress boutiques and vintage fashion shops where you can find some unique items to wear for a special occasion, be it a romantic ballet show, a delightful night out or a gala evening.
And then onto the ballet itself!
One of the best things about Derbyshire is that the people here are super-supportive of all the arts, and there are simply fantastic venues that host live performances. I was especially taken by The Curve, which hosted the *Derby Youth Ballet’s * production of "Coppelia.”
Oh darling! I saw “Coppelia” years ago, but the kids were incredible! I mean, the whole experience was an explosion of colour, movement, music, and just plain good, fun entertainment. These talented dancers moved with so much grace, energy and excitement. It was incredible. And to think that these young, talented, ballet enthusiasts – they get all this passion, love and devotion from Derbyshire, just shows you what a fertile, vibrant and beautiful place this county is. They are definitely dancers I’m going to keep an eye on for future international stardom! They’re going to make us proud – just watch!
Of course, no trip to Derbyshire would be complete without visiting the wonderful * *The Space, the heart and soul of the local dance community! **
The Space is this magical, vibrant community arts space where people of all ages come together to experience, learn and celebrate dance. I absolutely loved the “Celebration of Dance,” a whole day devoted to dance classes, workshops and performances - from ballet and contemporary to hip-hop.
It was like a dream, darling. People were swirling and twirling everywhere, it was magical! I think I’m still feeling the energy from all that movement. And this space truly lives up to its name – it really does give space to so much creativity. It’s all about sharing and inspiring people to explore new ideas. It is the most beautiful ballet school I have seen. It’s just the most special place – where so many amazing young, future dancers develop their skills. I even spotted a few adorable toddlers, tottering around in the cutest tiny tutus - you could just see their eyes lighting up!
Now darling, you might be thinking "Well Emma, you've gone and visited your home town, enjoyed some retail therapy, and seen some fantastic dancers - what next?"
Back to Planet Earth - it’s time to party!
Now, I have to say – the folks here in Derbyshire love to dance! And, my latest trip coincided with a massive birthday celebration of a good friend who also lives in the region – in Chesterfield to be precise! You’re all welcome, anytime! The place is simply gorgeous! I just can't stay put – my soul, darling, craves a good, hard-hitting dose of movement!
** And a bit of party! Now, if you are coming to Chesterfield for a night out you absolutely HAVE to visit The Crooked Spire! It’s not hard to miss darling - It's got an incredible church spire that has, well, a bit of a crooked angle - hence the name!
But what’s even more special – is the history that comes with this particular location. Did you know that Chesterfield boasts the most magnificent church in the county, the most spectacular and impressive. This incredible architectural feat dates back to the 14th century – but the “crooked spire” isn’t really the “Crooked Spire”. Darling, you see this lovely leaning thing is really Chesterfield Parish Church, and it is well known in Derbyshire history. The legend behind the crooked spire – that’s one for another blog post, because my, oh my – the tale itself is long and juicy. I mean it was built with a bit of a wiggle – but there's some serious history behind the structure, darling.
But, that’s another blog for another time, darling.
Back to our story – So, off to a night out in Chesterfield, dancing my pink tutu socks off! The good folk of Chesterfield have got a reputation for loving a party and enjoying a good, hearty dance. I must admit, darling – I gave it my all!
It was amazing – dancing the night away, watching people smile, and sharing my love of ballet with new people! Now, there’s nothing quite like dancing under a sky of glittering stars – especially when you’ve got on your favourite pink tutu! It's so refreshing to remember that joy comes from dancing your heart out, no matter what planet you're on. Oh darling, that was pure magic.
This whole Derbyshire experience, darling, it was a total dream come true, it was like stepping into a tutu-filled fairytale!
Now, let’s go for a bit of ballet history – some important dates for your diary, because, let’s face it – knowing all these things is just simply so fabulously fashionable!
Get your history on darling – these dates you HAVE to know!
