Pink Tutu World: #1087 – Ballet on Planet Earth (24th February 2016)

Darling readers, how are you all? It's your favourite pink tutu-wearing ballerina blogger here, Emma, reporting live from… well, Planet Earth! That's right, this week's adventure sees me back on terra firma, though frankly, I've been enjoying the sunshine and balmy breeze so much, I feel like I've been transported to a tropical paradise!

But before I get lost in a daydream about sun-kissed beaches and flamingo-pink cocktails, let's rewind a bit. For those of you who are new here, you may be wondering why this week’s blog finds me back on this celestial orb after such exciting intergalactic travels. Well, you see, darling, even the most glamorous interstellar fashionista needs to earn a living! And where better to do that than right here in the heart of London? Last week's whirlwind trip to Neptune (all thanks to my stellar performance of a shimmering pink tutu ballet in honour of the aquatic deities) left my purse considerably lighter, but my heart filled to the brim with cosmic joy.

And it seems as though the universe loves to bless those who follow their dreams. Just after my return from Neptune, I received an email, one of those that makes your heart leap out of your chest, a joyous message from a distinguished theatrical producer asking if I'd be interested in showcasing my dazzling ballet in London. Imagine my joy!

Naturally, darling, the answer was a resounding YES! This opportunity means a whole lot more than just earning a few galactic credits – it’s about spreading the joy of ballet to those who might never get to see it. I may have my spaceship to zip around the universe, but some of you wonderful souls are rooted here on dear old Earth. So, it’s my absolute pleasure to bring a little bit of celestial magic right to your doorstep!

And talking about celestial magic, darling, imagine my absolute glee at being presented with a stage absolutely bursting with fuchsia flowers, all adorned with iridescent gemstones! The whole stage looked as if a constellation had descended upon Planet Earth. My solo dance that evening, inspired by the moonlit dance of the celestial spheres, brought gasps from the audience!

After the performance, we gathered in the back of the theater for a rather fab cocktail party. Let me tell you, my dear readers, my outfit was a triumph! It was a custom-designed tutu made from the finest celestial silk – shimmering silver threads, encrusted with real gemstones (a gift from a dear friend on the Andromeda Galaxy), and a crown of vibrant pink roses! I could hardly believe how much attention it attracted!

Speaking of my most recent galactic expeditions, you might be curious to know that there is an entire universe waiting to be explored in the realms of pink tutus and ballet! Each planet holds unique styles and interpretations of the art of ballet – from the crystalline tutus of Venus to the dazzling kaleidoscopic patterns of the Jovian dancers! But today, I thought we could delve a little deeper into the fascinating history of pink tutus and ballet here on planet Earth.

There's this fascinating connection between ballerinas and pink, darling. Ever since the Victorian Era, pink has been considered the ultimate colour for femininity, grace, and delicate beauty, the embodiment of everything a ballerina represents. In the early days, the tutus themselves were more practical than fancy, usually made from white cotton. It wasn't until the early 1900s that pink truly ascended to the ballet throne! Can you imagine, my dears, wearing a cotton tutu for hours on end! The idea itself gives me a frightful shudder. The shift towards silk and satin allowed for the adoption of more vibrant colours like the gorgeous shade of pink you see everywhere today!

I know what you're thinking, darling: 'But Emma, isn't it a bit boring wearing pink all the time? Isn't there more to ballet fashion?'

Let's be honest, I have a distinct penchant for pink – I have an entire wardrobe of it, you see. It’s my go-to colour! It embodies all that's magical about life: whimsy, sparkle, joy and, of course, ballet. But there's definitely room for a rainbow of colours, especially when it comes to expressing ourselves through the beauty of ballet. We have ballet shoes in an array of vibrant colours, costumes from every shade of the rainbow and accessories to suit every fashion trend imaginable!

While pink might be my personal favourite, let me tell you, darling, every colour, every pattern holds its own magical meaning. I can spend hours simply observing and marvelling at the diversity of expressions that the wonderful world of ballet can offer. A crimson costume speaks of passion and intensity, a deep indigo evokes mystery and intrigue, a vibrant sunflower yellow exudes sunshine and optimism, while a playful lime green speaks of vivacity and playful energy.

Speaking of colour and vivacity, imagine my delight at my trip last year to a small theatre tucked away in a Parisian side street. The ballet they put on was an eclectic fusion of classical ballet and street dance. It was vibrant, edgy, and absolutely bursting with the spirit of modern life! I particularly enjoyed the ballerina's tutu – it was a stunning shade of emerald green, crafted with vibrant patterns and playful cuts that defied traditional expectations! I have to say, my dears, I nearly fainted! The sheer audacity, the brilliance, the brilliance! That night, it became my absolute dream to include some Parisian street ballet in my next performance in space. But alas, darling, space, especially deep space, can get a tad chilly, even for a super fashionable space ballerina such as myself!

Of course, a trip to Planet Earth, for me, wouldn't be complete without a touch of shopping. So, I did some wandering around the vibrant streets of London and unearthed an extraordinary treasure at the Harrods Department Store! Can you believe it, darling? The sheer wonder of it all – an exquisite silk pink tutu. Let me tell you, it was a sight to behold! The perfect addition to my expanding wardrobe! Oh, I practically gasped! The quality of the material, the delicate layering of the tulle, the subtle shimmer… chef’s kiss Simply divine. Oh, I wish I could show it to you! The moment I touched that divine material I knew I needed it for my next grand performance – but ahem, you'll have to wait to find out which galactic adventure will feature its debut, you'll have to wait till my next post, my darlings.

Speaking of exciting times to come, I do want to sprinkle in some insider knowledge for those of you planning a ballet journey on Earth this spring. It seems that the prestigious Royal Opera House is staging an all-pink themed ballet! I’m sure they are using real pink tulle this time and not some flimsy cotton, and as it's themed, I expect the show will feature stunning pink sets, beautiful pink costumes and maybe even pink lighting! I hear a rumour, though, it could be lavender and white. Can you imagine? Such whimsy, such delight. You should definitely add that to your “To-See” list, darling.

It wouldn't be a trip to Earth without a visit to Covent Garden, that historic gem nestled in the heart of London! It’s where the first theatre performance on planet Earth took place – that's a fact, darling, not some fabricated tale! It’s fascinating to consider the countless ballerinas, choreographers, composers, and audience members who have graced the hallowed halls of the theatre over the years. It's where I see the magic of ballet really blossom! It truly does make you think how long a history the performing arts has on this tiny little planet we live on, and how much it still has to give. So many incredible experiences to discover and a lot to explore. I may travel across the galaxy but my love for this art and my home planet never seems to dim!

While I am here on Planet Earth, I am also indulging my inner ballerina enthusiast by visiting the world-renowned Victoria and Albert Museum. The Ballet archives in that majestic old building house a vast and awe-inspiring collection of ballet costumes and shoes! I mean, the shoes alone, darlings! Oh my, such artistry. I almost fainted! But, of course, the ballet archives also showcase tutus that span the centuries, some of them dating back to the early days of the art form. From the delicate cotton tutus to the grand ball gowns, I can hardly imagine dancing in those magnificent pieces! Imagine trying to do a Grand Jete in a hoop skirt! One would simply tumble into the wings!

My time here on Planet Earth has been so jam-packed with activities, it’s a shame it must come to an end so soon. I know that life is full of joy and adventure on this vibrant planet. If you find yourself in the beautiful Derbyshire countryside, come pay me a visit, I would love to share a pot of tea and tales of our fabulous lives. Until next Wednesday, my dears! Enjoy the beauty of the dance, the thrill of fashion and the delights of the planet Earth. And never, ever forget: wear your pink tutu with pride!
