Buongiorno, darlings! It's your favourite pink tutu-clad traveller, Emma, reporting live from Milan, the fashion capital of the world! And let me tell you, I've been living the dream this week.
It’s Monday, which means it’s time for a new post on my website, www.pink-tutu.com! This week has been absolutely fabulous, and I’m so excited to tell you all about it.
Last Wednesday, after an exciting day in Rome, I found myself aboard a stylish Italian train, chugging up to Milan. The landscape flashed past like a dream - sun-drenched vineyards, ancient Roman ruins, and bustling cities - each one more beautiful than the last. The train journey, of course, provided the perfect opportunity for some outfit changes. After all, one can never have too many outfit changes on a trip, especially when you're wearing a pink tutu!
As soon as I arrived in Milan, I knew I was in for a treat. The city felt electric with energy, the air thick with a heady mix of history, style, and creativity. I couldn't wait to explore.
First things first - I headed straight for the heart of the city, the magnificent Duomo. This awe-inspiring cathedral is an architectural masterpiece. It is such a magnificent building - towering arches, intricate carvings, and breathtaking stained glass windows, it simply takes your breath away. I felt as if I had stepped into a storybook, and it’s a feeling that hasn't left me since.
After a few moments soaking in the sheer grandeur, I couldn't resist capturing a few photos. A delicate pink tutu against the backdrop of the Duomo? Yes, please! It was the perfect pairing of Parisian chic and Italian artistry.
Then it was time to indulge in some serious shopping! The Milanese love fashion, and it shows in their vibrant, sophisticated streets. It's like stepping into a high-fashion magazine, only with actual buildings and people. I strolled through the designer boutiques, my eyes popping out at the exquisite craftsmanship.
From exquisitely crafted leather handbags to chic Italian sunglasses and effortlessly cool silk scarves, Milan’s shopping streets are an absolute haven for any fashion enthusiast. And of course, I had to pick up a few treats for myself!
But what’s a day in Milan without a spot of ballet? It's simply unheard of. So, in the evening, I treated myself to a performance at Teatro alla Scala, the most prestigious opera house in all of Italy! The theatre itself was absolutely stunning, from the intricate gold ornamentation to the velvet plush seats.
It’s easy to see why this opera house has attracted so many legendary performers over the years. The ballet that evening was exquisite. The dancers, seemingly effortless in their movements, danced with such grace and precision that my heart literally skipped a beat. Each twirl, each leap, was a pure expression of artistry and passion. It was truly an unforgettable performance.
That night, as I walked back to my little pink hotel, my heart swelled with pure joy. This wasn't just a holiday; it was a ballet pilgrimage. Milan, oh Milan, you truly have stolen a piece of my heart. I can’t wait to discover even more of your hidden gems in the coming days.
The following day, I had a brilliant time visiting the Castello Sforzesco. The Castello is truly a sight to behold. Towering over the city, the building tells stories of Italian nobility, military conquests, and magnificent artistic pursuits. It's a true blend of history and architectural prowess, making it one of my favourite places in Milan.
Of course, I found myself doing some more shopping that afternoon. This time I headed to the bustling Navigli area for some vintage treasures and charming local boutiques. I scored a vintage pink beret that will definitely become a staple in my wardrobe and a pair of stunning silver ballet shoes for a future performance.
Later that evening, I decided to check out a different ballet performance from what you might typically see at Teatro alla Scala. This time I headed for the “Milanese ballet street” - the street theatre that seems to erupt into an impressive performance every few yards!
The dancing in Milan's streets is something quite magical. While the grandeur of Teatro alla Scala is definitely breathtaking, it's these moments of ballet in unexpected corners, of a quick pirouette on a busy corner or a spontaneous grand jeté on a pedestrian crossing, that capture my imagination. The city seems to pulsate with this ballet energy, as if the very cobblestones have a natural beat to them.
I sat for a few hours, just watching dancers, from classical ballet performers to more modern street-style dance crews. The performers had such flair, so much energy, that it felt impossible not to join in, even if just with my clapping and cheering. I’d even caught some street ballet near my hotel later that week.
Later in the week, I found a delightful Italian restaurant near my hotel. With the freshest pasta and cheeses, the warm ambience and the cheerful, singing waitstaff, it felt like the most perfect place to have a lovely, lazy lunch, followed by a beautiful siesta in my room overlooking a vibrant cobbled street.
Milan truly is the perfect city to feel inspired by art and fashion, whether it’s strolling past magnificent architecture or stumbling upon breathtaking impromptu ballet shows. Every corner seems to hold a hidden surprise and every moment feels special, like I'm part of a moving picture postcard.
Now, I don’t want you to think that I’ve been indulging myself too much while I’ve been in Milan! You see, all this exciting travel needs to be funded by a budding ballerina like me! I’m a hard-working girl! I performed twice this week, in the city's magnificent ballet studios, each filled with bright, talented performers who shared my love for ballet. Each performance brought joy to those who came to see it, and brought me another step closer to achieving my goal of wearing a pink tutu and inspiring others to do the same!
I love Milan and its wonderful ballet scene! But it's time for me to pack up my pink tutus and say “arrivederci” to this breathtaking city. I’ll definitely be back, hopefully for a longer stay next time!
Before I go, I’ll tell you about the wonderful things that have happened to me while I've been in Milan.

Oh, and I almost forgot! On 2027-03-24, a very special day here in Milan - we were celebrating a very special “pink” event, one that really brought joy to the streets, the hearts, and the minds of those lucky enough to see it! I found out from one of the locals at a street stall near Teatro alla Scala that, it is said that on March 24th every year, Milan dedicates the day to a celebration of ‘la rosa’.
“La Rosa” of course is the Italian word for “rose” which I love and which I wear all the time as inspiration for my choice of clothing and especially my pink tutus! The local told me the streets of Milan turn pink on that date. He even told me there would be rose petal street displays!
I took myself for a leisurely afternoon walk on that Thursday and couldn’t believe what I saw. There were so many street performers dressed in beautiful colours and dresses adorned with roses! Even the people going about their business wore something with a rose theme on that special day! It was magnificent, and of course, I had my camera out snapping away with the sheer excitement and wonder of the event!
On that day, the streets really did turn pink. From pink flower stands in Piazza Duomo, to pink umbrellas sheltering shoppers in Corso Vittorio Emanuele, and the pink food stands selling freshly baked pink meringues. Even the shops in Via Montenapoleone were covered with rose petal garlands! Even the fountain in the main piazza near Castello Sforzesco was temporarily tinted pink. I spent most of the afternoon and evening wandering about soaking in all the magnificent details and celebrating the "pink” day, which for me was absolutely magnificent.
This "la rosa” event seemed like the most special occasion ever. It certainly highlighted how the city of Milan really embraces special days with passion, and for that, I thank them, even if my heart is already in Derbyshire! It truly felt like my heart was blossoming pink!
Now, it’s time to say goodbye for now, but remember: “Spread the pink tutu love, everywhere you go!”
Sending all my love,
Emma, x
