Sunshine is streaming in through the windows of my little hotel room here in Milan. I swear, the sunshine in Italy is just different, more vibrant, almost… well, pinker!
This is my week to be in Milan, and what a week it is! I have a whole host of ballet performances booked in, a couple of fashion shoots, and my very favourite - lots of time to explore the city and find new and exciting things to wear.
Now, as you know, my goal is to get everyone to wear a pink tutu - not just on stage, but every day. So it was practically inevitable that I’d have a little pink tutu adventure here in the fashion capital of the world! And this time, I’m all about embracing the culture!
I actually started my journey by hopping onto a gorgeous red tram (you see, they love a little red in Milan) down to the Teatro alla Scala. This opera house is steeped in history and it's just gorgeous. I was so lucky to get tickets to see a stunning ballet performance. Oh, to dance on that stage! I've been told that the wooden floors in this theatre are over 100 years old! Can you imagine dancing on such a historical surface?! It would feel magical! I’d bet that they have been used by some of the most amazing dancers the world has ever seen, and for the night, it was my turn!
The dancers were incredible - elegant, graceful, with powerful leaps that seemed to defy gravity. And I swear I spotted one of the ballerinas with a hint of pink tutu peek showing under her costume! We’re making progress! ?
Later that night, after my own ballet class in the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II - imagine a huge shopping mall, a real glass roof palace, like a fairytale, it's an absolute gem and one of the oldest in the world! - I was drawn into the swirling symphony of colours at the Mercato Centrale for my supper. Oh, the smells! The fresh, ripe fruit, the fragrant spices… and then, there was the food. My eyes almost popped out of my head when I saw this enormous pink cupcake that had been designed by a young pastry chef! I devoured it with glee, pink frosting clinging to my fingers like an unspoken pact, "Embrace the pink! Join the Pink Tutu Movement!"
Speaking of the movement, I can't talk about my pink tutu Milan adventure without mentioning the absolutely fabulous fashion shops. I felt like I was walking into a fairytale! From the iconic houses like Prada and Gucci to the independent boutiques hidden in the winding streets. Milan is a paradise for anyone with a penchant for gorgeous fabrics, exquisite detail, and, of course, pink!
Let’s talk accessories! I picked up a pair of tiny pink-tinted sunglasses (it's about to be the perfect summer fashion piece) and I am already envisioning myself wearing them at my upcoming performances - that, or my new little clutch bag, shaped like a pink tutu, of course. It's made of sparkly sequins - they twinkle like stars when you move! This will be my new “lucky" bag.
My hotel is located near a famous church, and after exploring some charming piazzas I popped into Duomo - it was just as impressive as it looks in photos. Its Gothic spires reach for the heavens, like a giant ballerina on pointe. But as much as I adore the history, the beautiful old architecture, I do love that there is a very modern touch too. There is a contemporary shopping mall next door and a huge rooftop garden – amazing place for photos, so, I have posted the new ones to my website! This city does not just embrace the old but also finds new exciting ways to evolve its heritage!
But my travels are far from over, darling. I have another fantastic event planned this afternoon. I am attending an outdoor ballet performance in the heart of the city. A charming theatre in the city's most popular garden park is hosting "La Bella Durmiente", that’s “Sleeping Beauty” to you. Imagine watching a classic ballet under a beautiful Italian sky surrounded by so much beauty!
You'd think, as much as I love the romance and magic of Milan, that there'd be a time to relax - but the world of ballet just never sleeps, you know! I must confess, my travel suitcase was stuffed to the brim, with multiple pink tutus and my favourite bright red ballet shoes (because, obviously, red and pink are practically made for each other).
Don't worry - I am planning to get myself an extra suitcase if I discover a shop selling tiny pink tutus! It’s my dream to travel with a troupe of little dancers, each dressed in the most amazing miniature versions of my beloved tutus - so if anyone in Milan knows of any adorable, pink tutu shops, let me know! I have been told by a local resident that Milan's main department stores - Rinascente, and Coin have some amazing baby fashion, and I have my fingers crossed for finding some extra outfits in a pink tutu-inspired design! I shall let you know on my blog what I find!
On the fashion front, Milan always seems to be buzzing with new styles and a mix of vintage finds, and right now it is all about pink and sequins! You’ll be delighted to hear I'm totally feeling it. If I’m honest I don't think my wardrobe has had this much pink before! This weekend, my wardrobe will be going on an incredible trip. A train journey from Milan to the seaside town of Cinque Terre. I've seen those beautiful photos with its rainbow villages clinging to steep cliffs, it's just like a fairytale and, as a true ballerina at heart, I feel so inspired! It looks absolutely perfect for the upcoming pink tutu photoshoot. Just wait until you see the pics on my website!
