Bonjour, darlings! It's Emma here, your favourite pink tutu-clad blogger, and this week I've found myself in the magical city of Prague, a place that feels like it stepped straight out of a fairytale. Think cobbled streets, twinkling spires piercing the sky, and a vibrant energy that hums under the surface of this enchanting city.
But this isn't just a sightseeing adventure for your typical tourist ā I'm here on a mission, a mission to see Prague through the eyes of a ballerina. And of course, that means a pink tutu is absolutely essential, don't you agree?
This is my third blog post from Prague, which I know may seem a bit much, but honestly, this city is just too inspiring! Every corner I turn is a photo opportunity for my #PinkTutuPrague hashtag, and every day brings something new to explore. This week, though, Iām focusing on the beauty of ballet, exploring the rich history of Czech dance and celebrating one of my favourite pastimes: ballet theatre!
Finding Inspiration in the History of DanceNow, anyone who knows me knows I'm a sucker for history, especially when it comes to dance and the glorious evolution of the tutu. And Prague doesn't disappoint in that department! Did you know that Prague has a fascinating dance history that dates back to the Middle Ages? From medieval court dances to the development of the Czech National Ballet, there's a wealth of history and inspiration to be found. I spent an afternoon at the National Theatre, an architectural masterpiece that houses a treasure trove of dance stories and artistry.
But before we get to the National Theatre, let's rewind a little bit. How did I get to Prague anyway? Well, you lovely people will know that I love a good train journey. It's an opportunity to embrace the rhythm of travel, soak in the scenery, and most importantly, write in my journal. This week, my journey began in the beautiful English countryside, my hometown of Derbyshire providing a calming contrast to the urban rush of Prague. The train ride through Europe, though, was breathtakingly beautiful. Picturesque landscapes rolled by as I meticulously curated my new wardrobe additions ā because, let's face it, one can never have too many pink tutus, especially when theyāre vintage treasures picked up from quaint European boutiques. Iām rather obsessed with finding authentic pieces from different parts of the world, like my recent purchase from a shop in Vienna. The intricate lace and the pale shade of pink are almost impossible to resist!
Anyway, I finally arrived in Prague and immediately felt swept up in its charm. The first thing that struck me was the beauty of Prague's architecture. Thereās this sense of fairytale grandeur that really gets the imagination going. It feels like something out of a Tchaikovsky ballet ā all sweeping towers and elegant spires! And let's not forget the delicious Czech food, which has definitely inspired some creative choreography ideas for my next routine.
The Magic of the National TheatreSpeaking of creative choreography, my main reason for being in Prague this week was the opportunity to see a performance by the National Theatre Ballet company, one of the oldest and most prestigious ballet companies in Europe. Iād booked tickets for a performance of the āThe Nutcrackerā and was incredibly excited about the experience. This was, after all, my first time seeing ballet in a traditional theatre setting in Prague!
This magnificent theatre, located right on the banks of the Vltava River, is more than just a venue. It's a monument to art and culture, a testament to Czech history and the importance of performance. You could almost feel the whispers of past performances, the stories carried on the breath of every ballerina and dancer whoāve taken the stage. Stepping inside, it's like stepping into another world. The ornate interiors, with intricate gold detailing and crystal chandeliers, are breathtakingly beautiful. The auditorium is like a vast jewel box, gleaming under the light of the grand chandelier.
I loved seeing a live ballet in Prague. The story of the Nutcracker is just so captivating, and I have a lot of inspiration to translate the fairy tale into some new choreographed ideas for my classes.
But before I saw the show, I took the opportunity to admire the costumes and artwork housed in the National Theatreās archives. I was particularly intrigued by the exquisite craftsmanship of the tutu, which is so integral to a ballerina's costume. Every stitch and pleat is designed to enhance the beauty of movement. And let's face it, what's a pink tutu blogger without exploring the history of tutus?!
Of course, the National Theatre houses many pieces of original artwork too. In a world where everything moves at 100 miles per hour, itās a luxury to simply take a moment to appreciate something handcrafted, meticulously detailed and beautifully made.
Finding Prague's Pink Tutu MomentsBeyond the National Theatre, my adventure continued with the magic of exploring this beautiful city. My pink tutu became my signature piece, drawing attention and starting conversations with other ballet lovers in the heart of Prague. I discovered hidden studios and dance spaces that echoed the rhythm of life. From cobbled streets that became impromptu ballet stages to squares that resonated with the stories of a hundred years of dance, I found that the city is, indeed, a dancer's paradise.
There's also something very magical about the way the architecture itself lends itself to ballet inspiration. The bridges that arc over the Vltava, the curves of the towers and spires, all seem to suggest an elegant grace and fluidity that naturally connects with the essence of ballet. And for me, a ballet fanatic and a pink tutu enthusiast, thereās nothing better than experiencing these magical moments.
Speaking of which, I even found some other fellow tutu enthusiasts here in Prague! A local dance studio that specialized in ballet clothing and performance tutus ā youāll understand my excitement! This store was overflowing with treasures from all the worldās best tutu designers, many of them unique and authentic and, of course, in all shades of pink.
You know how much I love finding that special, unique item for my tutu collection. One of my proudest finds from this little hidden gem was a tutu from the era of the Romantic ballet. Made of tulle in shades of rose and a beautiful shade of pink, itās soft and airy, a little bit torn at the edge with that kind of chic wear and tear, and absolutely perfect for adding a little Parisian whimsy to my own personal tutu collection.
But for a girl on a mission to bring the pink tutu world to every corner of the globe, it wouldnāt be right to simply keep all the pretty dresses to myself. And thatās where my own little project, āBallet on the Streetsā, comes in! For this particular post, I asked a group of ballet students from a Prague school to pose in their pink tutus on Charles Bridge, just for a quick and quirky photoshoot. As youāll see in my vlog and social media feeds, it was hilarious and quite a spectacle as locals stopped in their tracks, a smile coming to their face as they saw this spontaneous pink tutu flash mob on one of Pragueās most famous bridges.
We had such a lovely time taking pictures! My love for the tutu is contagious, and I was so happy to help some new ballet dancers embrace the fun, confidence and elegance that only a pink tutu can provide!
And letās not forget the beauty of ballet theatre in this gorgeous city! As I sit here in a cafĆ© by the river Vltava, with a hot chocolate warming my hands, I'm reminiscing about the magic of the National Theatre, about the power of live ballet to touch our souls and move our hearts, about the timeless beauty of this art form.
The Prague ballet was an unforgettable experience! From the delicate beauty of the dancers to the energy of the performance, the show captured the spirit of the city perfectly. But most importantly, it confirmed my own feelings about this magical city, the city that has truly won my pink tutu heart.
