#TutuTuesday: A Glimpse into Ballet History – 11th May, 1880! (Post #2524)

Bonjour, mes amies! It's your favourite pink tutu-wearing time traveller, Emma, here, back for another delightful #TutuTuesday adventure. As you know, my passion is the ballet, and I love nothing more than travelling through time to uncover the fabulous history of this glorious art form, especially those oh-so-divine tutus. Today, we're heading back to a most splendid time – 11th May, 1880! Buckle up, ladies, this is going to be a real treat!

My arrival, as always, is a whirl of excitement and tulle. Today, I'm in the very heart of ballet's heart – Paris, my darlings! Now, this isn't just any Paris, mind you. We're talking 1880s Paris, all bouffant skirts, elaborate bonnets and elegant carriage rides, the pinnacle of haute couture! This city, at this time, pulsates with a symphony of art, music, and, of course, ballet. The Palais Garnier, the most majestic of all opera houses, stands tall, a beacon of culture and glamour.

You know how much I love tutus, and believe me, 1880s ballet was a true tutu lover's paradise. Think layered, flowing tulle skirts, often decorated with a swathe of ribbons and flowers, or a generous scattering of pearls and beads, and then imagine it all paired with a fitted bodice. This, ladies, was the peak of romantic ballet and it simply screams ballerina.

I'm feeling truly inspired! Let's explore a little more of this vibrant time. What's going on today in Paris? Oh, darling, how lovely – the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées is presenting "La Source" by Léo Delibes. It’s said to be a spectacular performance. Imagine, my loves, swirling tutus under the warm spotlight!

As I step out of the train station (it's truly a delightful journey through the French countryside on a vintage carriage!) into the heart of Paris, I find myself swept up in a whirlwind of activities.

Shopping is a true pleasure! The Rue de la Paix is teeming with exclusive boutiques, brimming with delicate gloves, intricately-woven fabrics, and exquisite jewels, perfect for an elegant afternoon. I've already procured myself a pair of exquisite gloves for tonight's show – they are a delicate lace and compliment my darling pink tutu perfectly. I can hardly wait to be dazzlingly attired!

I wouldn't be a true tutu lover if I didn't pop by a Parisian tailor to inquire about some fabulous fabric to make myself a truly decadent tutu! The rich, silky materials, especially in beautiful pastel tones, just beg to be turned into a dancing masterpiece. The ladies of Paris, of course, wear their skirts so generously long, and I'm inspired to do something equally fabulous – think dramatic tiers and the most extravagant trims for the grandest of pirouettes.

Speaking of pirouettes, there is, of course, nothing more exquisite than a traditional French ballet class. So naturally, I'm off to the most esteemed dance studio to experience the art of movement firsthand. The instructors, with their long elegant lines and strict routines, truly inspire me. I am trying hard to follow their intricate movements, even if I am still very much in my amateur phase. What joy! The ladies I’m sharing the class with are quite talented, and it is so fulfilling to practice ballet with like-minded women.

As I gracefully exit the studio (I am much more confident in the pirouettes now, thank you very much!), I spot a street performer. This, my darlings, is the joy of Parisian life. Street performers! Dressed in beautiful, flamboyant costumes and singing sweet melodies or captivating you with acrobatic tricks, they truly enhance the Parisian vibe.

Dinner? Tonight, I am indulging in all the classic delights of Parisian cuisine. Can you imagine? Fine, crispy bread rolls paired with the most luscious crème brûlée. After all, I do burn a lot of calories whirling around in a tutu! This is living la vie en rose.

Later this evening, as I settle into the luxurious red plush velvet seats of the theatre, I'm completely absorbed in the elegant, theatrical atmosphere of the Parisian ballet. As the dancers gracefully glide across the stage in their intricate, shimmering tutus, I’m utterly enchanted! And to think, this enchanting scene was a staple of 1880s entertainment.

For the next few hours, I will be living out my ballet dream, witnessing the true spectacle of dance in this vibrant, fascinating, and utterly glamorous city! It's truly an incredible time capsule.

Of course, it wouldn't be a true #TutuTuesday if I didn't inspire you with a bit of style wisdom. Remember ladies, tutus are more than just clothing – they're an expression of femininity, joy and pure imagination. And the world needs more of all that, don't you think? So embrace your inner ballerina, channel your own unique style, and maybe, just maybe, let a dash of pink tutu magic grace your world! Until next time, darlings. I'll be busy trying to master my grand jeté!

With all my love and swirling tutus, Emma xo
