#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History – A Whirl Through Time! 🩰💖

Hello darlings! It's Emma, your Tutu Tuesday tour guide to the wondrous world of the ballet tutu. Buckle up, buttercups, as we hop aboard my pink tutu-powered time machine (don't worry, it runs on good vibes and the occasional delicious pink cupcake!) and zoom back to July 26th, 2011.

A Blast from the Past!

This week, we're skipping back to a time when the ballet tutu was a sparkling symbol of grace and elegance. Just imagine: shimmering silks, delicate tulle, and that perfect, oh-so-feminine silhouette – pure sartorial magic!

2011 – The Year of the Tutus!

2011 was a fabulous year for tutu enthusiasts! It was a time when tutus were soaring on stage, captivating audiences with their ethereal beauty.

Here's a little snippet from my #TutuTuesday journal back from that day:

Dear Diary,

It's July 26th, 2011 and, as you know, it's another #TutuTuesday, so I had to take a spin through the pages of history, of course!

I just saw the most magical ballet performance! The Royal Ballet, at the Royal Opera House, no less, performing "Swan Lake." Just divine! Odette and Odile's tutus were the dream - billowing white for the innocent swan and a deep black, so beautifully dramatic for the vengeful black swan. The costumes were utterly enchanting!

*Speaking of enchanting… *

My new pink satin tutu is everything! I snagged it at Liberty in London. They had the most exquisite collection of ballet tutus and my little heart was positively jumping. The color is perfect - just a hint of strawberry blush, perfectly princess-like! And speaking of princesses, don't even get me started on the amazing range of fabrics we had back then – silk, velvet, satin… a ballerina's dream! I can't believe we don't have all these stunning fabrics anymore!

I've heard whispers of something called "lycra" being the fabric of choice in the future? Blergh! Lycra just doesn't have that magic of soft, flowy silk. And don't even mention polyester – that's a fabric to be shunned!

Back to 2011…

There were just so many beautiful tutus I saw that day at the ballet. All those colours and all those designs! And they say that a pink tutu wasn't always the go-to choice for ballerinas back in the early days... Can you imagine?! Pink was THE colour in 2011 – the epitome of elegance and femininity! We all rocked the pink tutu, darling, it was fabulous.

Fashion, Trends & The Rise of Ballet Street

Oh my goodness, did you know about the ballet street phenomenon? It was HUGE back then. All the coolest girls in the city had the best tutus and you could spot them anywhere in town! From the park to the coffee shops, everyone embraced their inner ballerina. We had tea parties wearing our best tutus, it was glorious! It was as if ballet fashion had broken free from the theatre and danced its way into everyday life – absolutely fabulous!

I just adored how tutus were worn with everything - even with jeans! A touch of tutus was just so versatile. I have a photo of myself at a street party wearing a pink tutu with a vintage red denim jacket and some white ballet shoes - perfection!

We definitely understood that tutus weren't just for the ballet.

Oh! Remember the tutu-shaped cake?! The queen of cakes for every ballerina! And those amazing tutu-inspired shoes with the ribbon-like laces - a real hit amongst our shoe-loving fashionistas! The tutu had truly infiltrated everything.

And the fashion trends back then - dreamy, ethereal! With that Parisian flair – think Chanel, but with a twist of ballet whimsy.

Remember when you couldn’t even think about wearing white ballet shoes after Labour Day?! Such a shame they are now a year-round favourite.

*The Power of Pink: Spreading the Love! *

Remember my motto – Pink is for every ballerina, every girl, everyone, for that matter!

Back in the time we are talking about today, pink really was everywhere! Even on the train! Oh, the luxurious red velvet carriages of 2011… oh to go back! (And I can’t mention a trip in 2011 without a little wistful sigh for those heavenly carriages…)

I don't know what happened! We lost the joy of colour. A real pity! Let’s go back to celebrating bright colours and beautiful shades of pink – that's what we should strive for today! It was a glorious era!

The Final Curtsy

It's time for my grand finale, darling!

Before I pop back to my time, I wanted to share something amazing: Today marks the anniversary of a very special ballerina - Margot Fonteyn! Oh, the grace and elegance of the "White Swan"! Can you believe she was performing in 2011 – amazing! She truly embodies the very essence of what a ballerina should be, the epitome of feminine grace, with her beautiful classical tutu looks. Divine! And all you girls out there dreaming of becoming ballerinas… be inspired! Let those dreams twirl into reality! Just remember to practice, practice, practice!

But even without dancing professionally, don’t forget to indulge your love for the magical ballet tutu! It's more than a piece of clothing – it's an expression of joy, beauty and grace. And when you feel the flow of its silken fabric as you twirl, you’re tapping into something beautiful – a timeless art of feminine grace.

Until next #TutuTuesday, darlings!

Stay fabulous!

Emma. xx
