#TutuTuesday: A Whirlwind Through Time! 🌸🩰

Hello, darling Tutu Twirlers! It's your favourite pink tutu-wearing time traveller, Emma, here with another #TutuTuesday installment, straight from the archives of my sparkly time machine. Today, we're waltzing back to 2026-04-28, a date filled with tutus, thrills, and a whole lot of fashion! ✨

Post #10140: A Tutu Tale of Times Gone By

Today, we're taking a spin through the rich history of the tutu. For those of you who haven't seen my previous blog posts - where have you been?! I'm Emma, a Derbyshire girl with a passion for pink, tutus, and of course, ballet. Every Tuesday, I use my time travel machine (don't ask how it works!) to hop across the decades, seeking out the most fabulous tutu moments in history!

Let me tell you, 2026 is a magical time for ballet lovers like myself! Imagine a world where even everyday life is infused with ballet! That's the world of 2026, and it's absolutely delightful. Today is no different, with a stunning show premiering in Paris at the Garnier Opera House. I have tickets, of course! It's an exquisite, modern piece by the brilliant young choreographer, Sasha Dubois. Her dance vocabulary is truly unique, with lots of beautiful lines and breathtaking jumps. It's pure, magical poetry in motion, perfectly captured by a backdrop of glittering sets and breathtaking costumes - all shimmering with gorgeous, multi-hued silks. The audience, like myself, will be awash in a sea of glittering pink. The sheer energy of the performance is sure to be electric! I just know I'll be rushing out to buy myself a new tutu afterward to capture the magic. I might even wear it to the opening night. We are after all celebrating the wonderful art of ballet, a art that can be enjoyed in everyday life. Just take a look at the current fashion trend – a ballet flat paired with a gorgeous chiffon gown or a stylish pencil skirt! The world is getting caught up in the ā€˜ballet-licious’ excitement!

I know, I know – I get excited about these things. It’s just the Derbyshire in me I guess.

Back to 2026… Ballet, however, isn’t just about glamorous performances on grand stages. It's all around us, a vibrant artform loved by millions! It’s just the right form of escapism, as our world keeps changing and we keep searching for a little magic. On April 28, 2026, a street ballet performance took place in Barcelona, which brought joy to everyone - young and old. People gathered in a beautiful square to watch the show with an electric atmosphere. It was beautiful! Even the pigeons seemed to enjoy it! They twirled with delight. Everyone seemed to forget the mundane worries of life for just a little while and let themselves be enveloped by the beauty and artistry of the performance! Now that’s my kind of magic! It reminded me, darling tutu twirlers, that ballet is for everyone, and everyone can experience its enchantment, whether in a grand theatre or a sunny square!

The Story Behind the Tutu: A Tale of Layers

The tutu we see today has evolved through a lot of fun phases over the centuries! Imagine a simple knee-length white skirt turning into the majestic, feather-light masterpieces of today.

Early ballet involved lots of intricate footwork, but the costumes, for men and women, were quite modest! The skirts were long and the idea of showing the legs wasn't as widespread as it is today! But then, as ballet developed and evolved, dancers' leaps and pirouettes became increasingly breathtaking! For these exciting dance movements, dancers needed a new, more lightweight costume – one which showed off their graceful movements! The answer? You guessed it – the tutu! It started as a shorter skirt with a shorter ā€˜bouffant’, or puffy shape, giving the dancers greater mobility. Gradually the skirt grew more elaborate, with layers of tulle creating a cloud-like shape and eventually creating a very short skirt!

I imagine a little bit of tutus came from the very first ballet dress! They just kept getting shorter and fluffier, just like me after a slice of Derbyshire plum pudding! But these weren't just random flourishes; they became a vital part of a dancers’ art!

So here is a mini-time travel, straight to some key tutu-tiful moments:

  • 1781: Imagine Marie Antoinette, the Queen of France, a stunning figure in a dazzling ballet! She dances in a rather fluffy white skirt, the prototype of our famous tutu! This is a wonderful signpost!
  • 1832: This year sees the emergence of a new type of tutu - the ā€œRomantic Tutuā€! Now, this has a slightly shorter, layered style, like a delicate flower blooms - graceful and romantic! The Romantic tutu is made for grand ballerinas like Carlotta Grisi and Fanny Cerrito.
  • 1870: Now it’s time for the ā€œClassical Tutuā€ or the ā€œTutu Plat!ā€ Imagine a tutu so light and airy that it seems to float. It often has layers of tulle attached to a corseted bodice, making it look truly dazzling! This style really took ballet fashion to a whole new level!

Tutus on the Run: My Adventures in the Past

Every trip through time with my trusty pink tutu by my side offers its own magic. Let me share some of my highlights!

  • 1890s, Russia: Picture St. Petersburg in the 1890s, a city awash in grand theatres. I visited the ballet world and admired the elaborate and colourful tutu creations for the stunning Bolshoi Ballet! And do you know what I saw there? The most stunning velvet, satin and feather creations! Just stunning!
  • 1940s, London: The city was busy battling a war, but despite the troubles, it was alive with creativity! During my stay, I found a performance of ā€œGiselleā€ at the Covent Garden Opera House! I could only gasp at the grandeur of it all! This time, I even enjoyed a charming Afternoon tea in a very grand hotel! Now that’s what I call ā€˜Tea Time’ in London!
  • 1970s, New York City: The 1970s saw a revolution in tutu designs! The classic designs had their moment, but a fresh wave of bold and experimental looks entered the scene. And what a welcome change it was! You know I’ve got an adventurous side! The tutu is just begging to be expressed in different styles and that’s precisely what it is! I felt so ā€˜avant garde’ !

Pink is Always the Answer

Today, as a ballerina living in this wonderfully colourful world, I want to encourage you, darling tutu twirlers, to embrace the joy of expressing yourselves through the amazing world of tutus. If you don’t feel it, fake it. If you can’t move it, just fake that too.
