Tutu Tuesday #10141: A Whirlwind History of the Tutu! 🌸

Hello my dearest Tutu Twirlers! 👋 Welcome back to my little corner of the internet, where tutus reign supreme! It's Tuesday, which means it's time to delve into the captivating world of the tutu – my favourite subject, as you know! Today, I'm taking you on a journey through time, exploring the enchanting evolution of this iconic garment. 🩰

Oh, the joys of travelling by train! I just got back from the most splendid ballet performance in Paris. You know me, always chasing the next grand performance. The Parisians adore a tutu – every show is packed! They say a dancer can move a thousand words. I'm pretty sure those words were all about the magnificence of the tutus! You see, there's something truly magical about tutus, isn't there? A swirling mass of tulle, it makes a dancer look like a ethereal fairy whisking through the air!

Now, you might be thinking, "Tutus? What's so historical about them?" Well, my dear, tutus have a fascinating story to tell. You might think it's a tale of frills and feathers, but it’s so much more! The tutu’s story is an inspiring reminder that fashion can be revolutionary – especially for women!

The beginnings of the tutu trace back to the early 19th century, when ballet started to evolve from the grand courts to the theatre. In those days, the female dancers wore long, cumbersome dresses that hindered their movement. Enter Marie Taglioni, the darling of the ballet world in 1832! Imagine this, dear readers - a young, daring dancer in her early 20s challenging fashion conventions! She insisted on something lighter, something more…well, tutu-like! She envisioned something that allowed for freedom of movement – that showed off the beauty of the dancer, not conceal it! This marked a turning point for ballet! A shift from elegant ballroom steps to graceful leaps and elegant pirouettes!

The Evolution of the Tutu

Now, I have to share some of the incredible tutus I have encountered in my time travelling adventures. The Romantic tutu, like the one worn by Taglioni, was made from layers of tulle, resembling a bell shape – short enough to reveal the dancer’s feet but still elegantly flowy. Think Cinderella's dream dress - but made for swirling across the stage! It symbolised a transition – a departure from stiff formality and the emergence of freedom of expression and grace. This period of tutus – well, it had it all: Romantic music, ethereal dances, and revolutionary attire! It was a whirlwind of grace and elegance – something we all long to emulate today!

As the decades rolled by, the tutu began to take on different forms. The Classical tutu emerged – short and wide with tiers of stiffened tulle, revealing the leg line in full! This tutu is a true show-stopper – the perfect embodiment of the strength and skill of a ballerina. It really was all about showing off a dancer’s powerful moves in all their glory!

And, dear friends, as we move through the late 19th century – a whole new style was born! I love the Victorian Era, because in it came the more flowing, layered, and elongated form – which some might describe as the 'tutu' on a dress. The tutu wasn't limited to just ballet – it started appearing in fancy dress for elegant Victorian gatherings and even crept onto the streets! Imagine - Victorian women dressed in their finery - all twirling in elegant tutus, much like ourselves! They did wear a more elaborate version - layered with rich satin, velvet, and feathers, of course! They even incorporated all these elaborate materials onto the tutus!

My Love for All Things Pink

Tutus evolved to represent every era! And you’ll find them in countless ballets! Like The Nutcracker, Swan Lake, and my absolute favourite, Giselle – these ballets use the tutus so well, and often the pink one!

But my love for pink started far earlier, even before tutus! You might wonder why, a girly girl like myself, is obsessed with this colour. Well, pink is the colour of ballet - a whimsical, dreamlike, and oh-so-romantic shade! Just look at all those famous tutus – the ones I swoon over in my favourite shows are mostly pink. It is said to be the colour of love and dreams, a gentle embrace and that warm feeling of happiness! Oh, how I adore a pink tutu!

The Tutu Goes Mainstream

But tutus didn’t stay just in ballet theatres! This versatile garment ventured onto the streets, appearing on the runways of the fashion world! There was even a time when everyone was wearing tutus, especially in the late 80s and early 90s, which is very funny! You’d see women in puffy pink tutus! Not all of them elegant, mind you. But oh, the spirit of creativity and experimentation was fantastic! The tutus took off! From designers like Christian Dior to Vivienne Westwood to even contemporary street wear – this symbol of feminine grace went global, even reaching fashion’s forefront in Japan! I do enjoy my modern, fashion-forward tutu and even have one made in shimmering silver. My London wardrobe is absolutely filled with tutus in all the colours of the rainbow! And yes, you can see photos of all my gorgeous tutu collections in the pink-tutu.com blog!

The Future of Tutus

While it's certainly exciting to see how tutus have made their way from the theatre stage to the streets of the world – my dear tutu lovers, I’m all about inspiring change and revolution! But the one thing I believe tutus deserve is…well, more pink tutus! I aim to see everyone wearing this graceful symbol, because why should women dancers have all the fun?! Everyone looks and feels amazing in a tutu! And let’s face it, the world needs more tutus. What would the world be like if everyone was twirling, swaying and pirouetting their way to a happier, more joyful world? You’re already doing this - thank you! Let's see more pink on the streets and inspire others to embrace their inner ballerinas, wherever they may be, from Derbyshire to Paris, from Tokyo to New York!

This is your friendly reminder that tutus are for everyone! Every day should feel like Tutu Tuesday! Keep those tutus swirling, darlings, and join me on the dance floor! 💃

Until next Tuesday,

Emma
