Hello darlings, it's your favourite pink tutu-clad queen, Pink Tutu Sparkles, and welcome to post number 9649 on www.pink-tutu.com! Today, I'm bringing you all the glitz and glam from a recent trip to the wonderful world of Hornchurch, Essex. Yes, you read that right! This travelling queen was heading east, but not to find my favourite tea room (that would be Kensington!), I was on a mission to dance my way through Essex.
I gotta admit, a train journey is always an adventure in itself, but this one was particularly special. My usual train attire? Why, a fluffy pink tutu, of course! You can't expect to just hop on the 10.42 from London Victoria looking like any ordinary person! A pink tutu always attracts attention, especially with a good old-fashioned boa to compliment the outfit, and on this train trip, I even got some compliments on my shoes! Turns out, a matching set of sparkling silver ballet pumps do a grand job of completing a look, whether you're twirling on a stage or catching the 10:42 from Victoria.
The first stop in Hornchurch was a visit to the Queen's Theatre, a place known for its amazing theatrical productions, which even the most discerning drag queen like myself couldn't ignore. This magnificent theatre was a perfect excuse to unleash my inner ballerina. The stage lights, the smell of popcorn (yes, I indulge!), and the buzz of excited chatter just filled me with inspiration. And wouldn't you know it? This amazing theatre actually put on an adaptation of 'A Midsummer Night's Dream', now that just had to be seen! I, of course, got all glammed up for the occasion. Imagine, a full pink tutu, glitter that literally rained from my hair, and a sparkly leotard, a real spectacle to be seen. All the while keeping a sharp eye out for the magical fairies who often populate that Shakespearean dream! I just can't resist getting involved in theatre; those dazzling lights are a true joy!
I managed to find time to catch a few ballet performances as well. The ballerina's grace and athleticism always take my breath away! Now, when you say balletic, do you mean it? Well, you'll be shocked to hear that, while I’m certainly known for a tutu and performing a little ballet-esque, the best part about a trip like this was discovering the local dance scene. Honestly, there was even ballet on the streets of Hornchurch! One evening, I was browsing some antique shops - who doesn't love a good vintage find - when I heard beautiful, rhythmic music drifting through the air. A group of young dancers was performing a vibrant ballet piece right on the cobblestones! A tutu couldn’t be out of place there. That kind of street performance just showcases how accessible and thrilling ballet can be. It made me realize that the real magic of ballet can happen anywhere!
One thing I always look out for on a trip is where I can buy my next perfect tutu, now it would be very gauche to say only where I could get the perfect pink tutu! My love for tutus knows no colour boundaries. That said, it's no surprise I found a charming little boutique on Hornchurch High Street, crammed with shimmering sequins and tulle in a plethora of colours! You bet I took the time to sift through them, hoping to find some hidden gems - maybe a pink-tinted, vintage lace tulle creation. I even struck up a conversation with the shopkeeper, who was just delighted by my bright, bubbly personality (and, perhaps, a little envious of my fabulous outfit!). That shopkeeper and I discovered that we shared a passion for tutus and dancing, making my time there even more special!
Don’t get me wrong, sometimes a good shop or performance is exactly what I’m looking for, but some places simply call for something a bit different, something a bit more off-beat, a bit more, well, whimsical. After spending the afternoon with tutus, sequins, and all the glitter, I thought: “what better way to finish off a day in Hornchurch than a trip on a horse-drawn carriage?” It may seem a tad silly for someone wearing a tutu to take a carriage, but who better to ride with grace than someone like myself! Besides, when I told the coachman I wanted a ride “a la Cinderella," the look of amusement turned to pure joy! Well, darling, a real princess has to get around, even in Hornchurch. I found out this quaint little town was full of surprises - charming little pubs, traditional tearooms, and that's not even mentioning the shops that boasted vintage furniture, antiques, and some very cool secondhand clothing. In between exploring the nooks and crannies, I managed to score some fab new outfits (more on those later!).
Every evening, of course, I donned my dazzling costume and performed in any place willing to let me do my thing. Whether it was at a local pub, a community centre, or even at a family fair, I made sure the message of my drag persona went forth: "wear a pink tutu!" Well, maybe not in every instance, sometimes I even perform in a bright yellow, or a stunning scarlet one, it’s just fun to mix things up every now and then. Hornchurch turned out to be an amazing little spot for me to embrace all things girly and put on a show, and of course, you bet I handed out business cards to every soul that was happy to be a witness to my delightful spectacle!
It seems everywhere I go, I have to try and include a visit to a little bakery or sweet shop. Well, who can resist those freshly baked croissants or melt-in-your-mouth cakes, and with a touch of glitter here and a pink-tinted sugar heart there, there was always the potential to turn a simple pastry into an edible piece of art. In fact, when I went for a coffee at the cafe by the Queen’s Theatre, they even decorated my latte with a little pink tutu, just like a small edible homage to this traveling queen! They knew my real name, it turns out my “friend" was actually just behind me! The lovely lady had seen me perform that afternoon! Such an awesome place to get an amazing sugar fix! I'm pretty sure I'm going to end up bringing this trend back to Derbyshire, and with a dash of pink sprinkles, there’ll be nothing but tutus in Derbyshire bakeries too!
My dear friends, after spending a week dancing through Hornchurch, exploring its beautiful streets, and wowing the locals with my sparkly outfits and pink-tinted brilliance, I bid this sweet little town farewell! Now, back to a world of lab coats, but at least there is time to dream about all my next trips, with my ultimate dream destination being the home of fashion - Paris!
So until next time, stay fabulous and make sure to find the pink tutu that calls to your inner princess, even if that one calls to you in all black with glitter. Remember, the magic of a pink tutu isn’t just in its colour - it's in its potential to unleash the whimsical and magical in all of us!
