Pink Tutu World: Planet Earth Blog Post #285: "Ballet on Planet Earth - A Tutu-tastic Time!"

Wednesday, 11th October 2000

Hello my lovely tutu-wearing, ballet-loving friends! Emma here, straight from a fabulous journey back to Planet Earth from our latest galactic adventure, and I'm so excited to share it all with you!

As you all know, my week is never complete without a visit to Planet Earth for some good old fashioned fun, shopping, and a healthy dose of ballet, of course! And this trip was no different.

Let's rewind back to last Wednesday

This week’s visit to Planet Earth started, as always, with an early morning flight from my spaceship, "Twinkle Toes" (don't worry, I've upgraded from the original spaceship "The Tutu Flyer", because we are a growing, stylish, galactical community and needed more room!). The early sunrise was gorgeous, and as I landed at my usual spaceport in Derby, England (you’d think with this kind of life, I could choose another landing spot, but sometimes, it’s just nice to return to familiar ground, wouldn't you say?).

The crisp air of a British autumn always welcomes me, even if my wardrobe, as always, was screaming out for a change of attire. Forget woolly jumpers! I'm more of a feather boa and diamanté girl! After my early morning spaceship journey, I was ready to hit the streets and, most importantly, head for some retail therapy.

Tutu-ific Shopping Spree in Nottingham

Planet Earth has always had a unique place in my heart. After all, it's the birth place of some of the most glorious ballet masterpieces ever written, and its capital cities hold the most beautiful shops.

It had been a few weeks since I was last here on Earth. My itinerary, of course, was already planned and organised. My shopping day always begins at "The White Room", an incredible department store in Nottingham - my ultimate Planet Earth heaven for vintage ballet clothing, hats and everything pink!

My Pink Power Look

A beautiful coral and emerald green chiffon scarf in the window display immediately grabbed my eye and, as you can imagine, I had to grab it immediately! It just felt like a cosmic force had guided my hand. And with a fabulous fuchsia polka dot feather boa to accessorise, I knew I had myself a winning combination! (The perfect ensemble, for a ballet show, a theatre trip, or just a day in the city!)

And what's a shopping day without a pit-stop for tea and cake? Nottingham's famous “Betty's Tea Room" always delivers. It's no surprise, therefore, that my choice for this day’s attire included my favourite “The Tutu Flyer” ballet shoes in shimmering coral pink (with a tiny emerald gem that glistened under the bright city lights, obviously!)! After a few (okay, maybe more than a few) sugar-fuelled, tea-stained biscuits, I was ready for the main event of my trip: the Ballet!

Royal Ballet at the Nottingham Theatre

A little birdie had whispered about a show happening at the beautiful Nottingham Theatre tonight, which I simply couldn’t miss! And tonight's programme at the Nottingham Theatre certainly didn't disappoint: the majestic "Swan Lake!" I took a moment to really soak it in the historical significance of the theatre, its gorgeous velvet curtains, the grand orchestra that would soon start to play
. My little ballerina heart was filled with such joy!

You see, I always say, “If you want a truly “tutu-astic time,” nothing can beat a traditional ballet show”. So as the lights went down and the orchestral intro music began to build, I grabbed a little (sparkling pink) notebook, a special (sparkly pink) pencil (all part of the fabulous ballerina’s arsenal!) and prepared to be utterly wowed, transported and totally inspired. Every elegant move from the swans, the energy of the prince, every single thing had a message, and I was able to get lost in the narrative as if I had stepped out of reality.

My Thoughts on Swan Lake

As a little girl back on Planet Earth, "Swan Lake" was always the ballet that was close to my heart, so, of course, every time I’m here, I always try to see a new interpretation. Tonight’s show at the Nottingham Theatre was brilliant: the dancers were stunning, the costumes divine, and the way the entire theatre was bathed in the softest light of dusk... I truly felt part of the story unfolding before me.

This classic tale really brought me back to a time before space travel became my lifestyle. To the moment when I’d spend hours after class, on Planet Earth, trying to perfectly mimic every beautiful pirouette and arabesque
All that hard work definitely paid off and as I watched each graceful movement, it filled me with such delight!

I especially loved the pas de deux (dance duet) in the second act. It is, I think, an incredibly challenging dance: to create this balance between elegance, strength and power...It truly takes incredible focus. I think this ballet is always one of the best displays of that delicate combination. As the music rose and the swans performed with such a fluid, ethereal quality, it felt almost like I could understand how the legendary Tchaikovsky might have come to create the piece, inspired by the real ballet. And then the audience clapped! They must have been so touched, moved by the show as much as I was, and it warmed my heart to experience such passion from everyone around me!

I am so passionate about ballet! All those graceful movements are all that make it truly so, so special
And tonight, I was reminded of the power of beauty that this artistic discipline brings!

An Evening at the Nottingham Theatre
 And My Thoughts

This show at the Nottingham Theatre certainly ended on a high. I left the theatre feeling full of inspiration. It's something I take away from every trip back to Earth - an opportunity to find inspiration again and to find myself, through this art form! Ballet brings joy to my heart in a way that I really believe everyone should try to understand!

Final Thoughts From Emma, Pink Tutu World

After a final check in with my beautiful pink spacesuit (always in perfect order! It's so important to always present oneself with impeccable taste) I bid a fond farewell to Nottingham and started the journey back to my spaceship, “Twinkle Toes”... The stars and galaxies beckon! And don't worry, as I’m making my way across the galaxy this week, I’ll continue to fill you in on more adventures!

Until next week
remember to “Stay Fabulous”, stay stylish and, most importantly, keep twirling those pink tutus!
