Helloooo my dearest darlings! It’s your favourite space-faring tutu enthusiast, Emma, bringing you a new dose of pink-tastic brilliance straight from Planet Earth!
This week, we're diving headfirst into the magical history of the tutu - a garment so iconic, so beautiful, it deserves a standing ovation, and honestly, wouldn't you just love to have your very own pink one? I know I do! And don't worry, this journey doesn't just involve fluffy fabrics and dainty twirls; we're going all the way back to its humble beginnings and taking a peek at how this masterpiece of dancewear evolved into the symbol of grace and femininity we know and adore today!
From the Court to the Stage: A Tale of Layers and LaceThe story of the tutu, my loves, is a story of evolution, of daring to break tradition and dance to the beat of your own drum. Its roots lie in the 16th and 17th centuries, a time when French ballerinas were swathed in layers of fabric - think billowing skirts, endless ruffles, and petticoats galore. It was a look, let's just say, heavy on the dramatic flair, but not quite conducive to high-flying leaps and grand jetés, am I right?
As the 19th century dawned, something amazing happened: The tutu underwent a transformation, becoming lighter and shorter. Marie Taglioni, an absolute icon in the world of ballet, was one of the first ballerinas to embrace this revolutionary style. She had a genius idea: why not simplify the skirt? She was looking for something graceful, flowing, that would highlight her delicate movements and allow for incredible feats of strength and grace. And let me tell you, darling, the effect was absolutely revolutionary!
With the emergence of this new silhouette, the "tutu" was born. But it wasn't all smooth sailing, not initially at least. This dramatic new look - imagine the gasp, the whispers, the scandalous murmurs! - was a departure from the traditional styles and provoked some pretty strong reactions from conservative folks back in the day. You see, the original tutus were all about that romantic aesthetic, long, flowing skirts with lots of layering and draping. But as time passed, designers started experimenting with different fabrics, colours, and shapes. It was a dance of innovation, darling!
The Ballerina’s Weapon: The Power of PinkAnd talking about dance, wouldn’t you just know, the world of dance and the evolution of the tutu has brought us so much joy throughout history, and so many beautiful pink tutus, oh my! But there's another story to be told, my lovelies, one that shines brighter than any spotlight on a stage! It's the story of how the humble tutu transformed into something truly extraordinary, and for me, the story of how the colour pink stole our hearts!
Remember Marie Taglioni? She was the absolute queen of this ballet revolution! You can’t talk about tutus without acknowledging her contribution. She was the one who brought that delicate, airy feeling to the stage, with those gorgeous, long, flowing skirts. Remember the classic, romantic tutus? Those ones, the iconic ones, those were born with Marie. They’re still absolutely breathtaking! And let’s be honest, the whole romantic era in dance, oh my darling, was a love affair for the ages.
Then, we started moving forward in time and boom! It was the beginning of a brand new age! Ballet started embracing the vibrant colours and dynamic moves of modern times, with the tutu changing with it. I’m talking bright, bold colours, incredible combinations of fabrics, even daring new forms. Honestly, you just couldn't ignore that sheer energy and innovation in dance. And you know what's truly brilliant about this transformation?
It showed the world that the tutu, darling, it was no mere costume! It was an actual expression of the soul, the very spirit of dance itself, and that is a power worth celebrating! And I love celebrating that power, every time I step onto a stage and dance, and I love, love, love rocking a bright, vibrant pink tutu - honestly, it's like I'm wearing the most magical feeling of freedom and creativity, and I just adore that feeling!

Back in Time, A Twirl in History: The Date is 23rd January 2008But let's be practical. As fun as those tutus are, it's important to keep in mind that they are a costume. And today, let’s go back in time and land ourselves back on the beautiful planet earth to celebrate the 23rd January 2008, because in the wonderful, bustling, vibrant, fun city of London, one of my all-time favourite shows, Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake, opened at the Sadler’s Wells Theatre!
It's one of those performances, darling, that transcends the stage. It is breathtaking, and as someone who truly loves a spectacular show with a magical sense of storytelling, this one gets me every single time. If you're looking for a show to capture your heart, I highly recommend seeing it - especially on the planet earth, there’s no better place for some dazzling dancing, or should I say swanning. And I’ll let you in on a secret, Swan Lake had a fabulous opening in London!
The opening was met with cheers and gasps - we all knew we were in for a special show - and this was a show filled with the magic of tutu moments, too! Imagine delicate, shimmering feathers, dramatic lighting that painted the stage with the colours of dawn and dusk, a heart-stopping story of romance, sacrifice, and some beautifully crafted tutu creations! It was so exciting, and I absolutely loved it! I loved the passion in the choreography, the storytelling in the movement, and that tutu wardrobe! * Swan Lake* really set the stage alight, my darling. It's one of those experiences that truly stays with you - you feel the emotions, the drama, the incredible energy on the stage. And I dare say, with all the magic it evokes, that Swan Lake even made me want to create my very own, bespoke swan lake tutu. What a truly incredible journey.
