Oh, Milan, how I love you! The energy, the architecture, the gelato, and oh, the tutus! I have just fallen completely head over heels in love with this city all over again. And it’s Wednesday, my favourite day of the week. Why? Because it’s the day I get to share all my fabulous Milan adventures with you, my dearest Pink Tutu readers!
Today was a glorious mishmash of sunshine and shopping, cultural immersion, and, of course, a healthy dose of ballet bliss. After a breakfast of cornetti and creamy coffee at my favourite cafe near the Duomo, I decided to embrace the beauty of a Tram ride across the city. I love the gentle rocking of the trams as they navigate the cobbled streets, the buzz of conversation, the feeling of being part of the city’s heartbeat. I even spotted a little girl wearing a sparkly pink tutu as she giggled with her grandma – how adorable!
My first stop was the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, an architectural masterpiece of a shopping arcade that's as dazzling as it is beautiful. I confess, I spent a good chunk of the morning gazing up at the ornate vaulted ceiling, awestruck by the Italian artistry. But then, I reminded myself of the purpose of this trip – to find the perfect tutu for tonight’s performance!
The shops were crammed with delightful designs, each one tempting me with their sparkle and intricate details. From the classic romantic lines of Dior to the playful modern silhouettes of Gucci, I was in absolute heaven! Eventually, I settled on a shimmering pink number with layers upon layers of tulle, finished with a delicate silver ribbon tied around the waist – it was pure magic.
My stomach was grumbling, so I decided to take a pit stop for lunch at a charming little trattoria down a narrow street near the Teatro alla Scala. A bowl of steaming pasta alla bolognese, a glass of chilled limonata - simple pleasures done right!
After lunch, I felt a surge of excitement, because the afternoon was all about ballet. The Teatro alla Scala is a jewel of the Italian opera world and I was thrilled to finally see a performance here! Tonight’s ballet, Romeo & Juliet, promised to be a heart-wrenching masterpiece and I simply couldn’t wait to see how this legendary theatre brought the story to life.
It’s an amazing experience being transported by ballet – how each delicate gesture and perfectly executed pose speaks volumes about love, tragedy, and the complexities of the human soul. The sheer skill of the dancers, the stunning sets, the grandeur of the theatre… it all merged together to create an enchanting, almost ethereal atmosphere.
Before heading back to my hotel, I wandered through the streets of Navigli. It’s a delightful area, filled with narrow canals, buzzing restaurants, and street art galore. The canal-side promenade is absolutely magical, lined with brightly coloured buildings and brimming with the laughter of families and couples.
As I sat at a cafe with a delicious slice of tiramisu (don't judge, it's Italy!) watching the sunset paint the sky in vibrant hues of orange and pink, I was overcome by a feeling of pure contentment. I have loved every second of my Milan trip – and the most amazing part is knowing I have another five days left to explore and discover this incredible city!

Here are some useful tips I’ve learnt during my time in Milan:
1. Embrace Public Transport - Milan’s trams and buses are reliable and efficient and you’ll get a glimpse into the real life of Milan!
2. Book Ahead for Theatres and Performances – Especially if you are looking to visit the prestigious Teatro alla Scala, book tickets well in advance.
3. Explore Beyond the Tourist Trail – Discover the magic of hidden laneways, quirky cafes, and secret gardens - it’s these special gems that will give you an authentic taste of Milan!
4. Don't be Afraid to Indulge – Try out a creamy gelato from Grom, a plate of pasta at a trattoria, or an indulgent espresso from a cafe – after all, it's Italy!
*5. And most importantly - always bring your pink tutu! * You never know when a spontaneous dance moment might arise.
Here’s what I’m most looking forward to this week:
An evening performance at the Teatro alla Scala. This is the perfect opportunity to get swept away by a performance. The atmosphere, the music, the sheer talent… it will be breathtaking!
A fabulous day exploring Brera , Milan’s art and culture quarter. There's an abundance of galleries, museums, boutiques, and of course, delicious cafes - perfect for spending a day browsing and soaking in the creativity!
A visit to the *Leonardo da Vinci Museum. This museum is dedicated to the great artist, inventor, and genius of Leonardo Da Vinci, showcasing his incredible works and life stories - and the story behind *Mona Lisa is fascinating!
