Hello my darling tutu lovers! Emma here, back from a whirlwind adventure in Milan! As the leaves begin to shimmer with autumnal hues back in Derbyshire, I’ve been soaking up the sun in the fashion capital of Italy. Let me tell you, it's been an absolute dream!

This week, my trusty pink tutu and I took to the cobbled streets of Milan, embracing the city's vibrant energy. From its world-renowned opera houses to hidden vintage shops bursting with vintage treasures, every corner held a new delight. This post is jam-packed with details about my Milan escapade - from the ballet performances that sent shivers down my spine to the delectable food that filled my tummy (and made my tastebuds sing!).

I love how convenient the Italian public transport system is, especially those iconic yellow trams, with their charming jingling bells. They’re like a mobile art installation, gliding past elegant architecture and buzzing with life!

I took the train from Derbyshire and caught a connection at St Pancras International - ah, the thrill of London never gets old, even for a fleeting visit. But there’s nothing quite like being in the Italian countryside, seeing the sun shimmering over rows of grapevines.

Milan, here I come!

Oh, my darling tutu enthusiasts! Where do I begin? The Teatro alla Scala, or simply La Scala, is an iconic opera house that left me utterly mesmerized. I mean, even the building itself is an architectural masterpiece, all soaring columns and shimmering gold leaf!

Stepping inside felt like stepping into another era. I could practically feel the echoes of generations of singers and dancers within those walls.

This week's performance was a stunning rendition of “La Bohème,” by Giacomo Puccini. The story was so incredibly moving and powerful, and the singing was absolutely breathtaking. Honestly, I almost teared up at the end - it was such an emotional rollercoaster!

Seeing “La Bohème” at La Scala made me think about how ballet and opera really tell such universal stories, stories of love, loss, hope, and the human spirit. And there's nothing quite like the collective experience of a live performance - everyone hushed in anticipation, captivated by the story unfolding on stage.

After the show, I had a delightful pasta dinner near the opera house, savouring every bite as I reflected on the evening's magic. You see, I always like to go a little all-out when I’m experiencing a new place, and a pasta dish like I had – think spinach ricotta tortelloni bathed in truffle butter - was exactly the right way to end a day like that!

Every girl loves to shop, right? And in Milan, the shopping is a serious affair. Think of designer boutiques, quirky vintage shops, and bustling markets overflowing with tempting treasures. It's a fashion-lover’s paradise!

I spent a blissful afternoon wandering through the streets of Brera, browsing vintage clothing and browsing the shelves of independent boutiques. My favourite find was a stunning pink and white patterned vintage blouse – the perfect addition to my ballet wardrobe!

I also stumbled across this absolutely darling little antique shop hidden in a tiny courtyard – imagine cobblestones and wisteria dripping down the walls. They had so many cool trinkets and pieces of costume jewellery; it felt like stepping back in time.

Shopping in Milan isn't just about the things you buy, it’s the whole experience. It's about enjoying the vibe of the city, the friendly conversations, and finding those little gems hidden in the most unexpected places.

I ended the day with a steaming cup of Italian coffee in the Piazza della Scala - a charming plaza bustling with life – while watching the sunset illuminate the Duomo. What a perfect way to end a shopping spree in this stylish city!

The magic of dance extends beyond the grand stages. In Milan, I stumbled upon the most delightful street performance on my way to La Scala, just off the Via del Corso, the heart of the shopping district.

It was a young couple – a charismatic man and a beautiful woman, with amazing grace and synchronicity. They were dancing with so much passion and energy - everyone around stopped to watch, cheering and applauding as they finished.

It made me realise, again, the beauty of ballet lies not only in those formal performances but also in spontaneous, joyful movements shared with others. Street performances have a different kind of magic; they connect you directly to the heart of the city, the beating pulse of its people. It made me long to twirl and dance amongst the crowds. I need to find an excuse for a street performance – who's with me?

Of course, no trip to Italy would be complete without enjoying the delicious cuisine. I indulged in traditional pasta dishes, creamy risottos, mouthwatering pizzas, and the freshest seafood. (One afternoon, I took a delightful tram ride along the Navigli canals – lovely bridges and the best focaccia!) And for the perfect end to a long day of exploring, gelato!

In Milan, there are a thousand places to grab an espresso, from the iconic coffee shops nestled near the Duomo to charming cafes tucked away on hidden side streets.

This week’s pick was a cafe just off Via Manzoni. The aroma of coffee and freshly baked pastries filled the air.

I was especially mesmerized by a local pastry called panettone - fluffy bread dotted with raisins and candied fruit – just delightful! Every bite is a celebration of the best Italian ingredients.

Speaking of celebrations, Did you know this weekend marks the beginning of the “Festival of San Babila,” an exciting festival honoring the city’s patron saint. I can't wait to check it out, to explore the lively processions, enjoy the traditional music, and embrace the festive atmosphere of Milan!

So, my darlings, Milan has once again proven to be a haven for all things tutu-worthy, for ballet lovers, and for anyone who simply wants to explore a beautiful, vibrant city brimming with artistic energy.

As I head back to Derbyshire with a suitcase full of memories and a renewed appreciation for this magical country, I am filled with a sense of joy, inspiration, and an undeniable urge to dance!
