Buongiorno, darling readers! It's Emma here, back from the glamorous streets of Milan, and oh my goodness, what a week! This week in Milan, I truly felt like I'd stepped onto a stage – with every corner holding a new breathtaking scene and the scent of coffee and freshly baked pastries filling the air like a perfect curtain call. I swear, this city's got a magical spell that's making my tutu twirl a little bit faster!
Remember how last week I mentioned I'd be here for a couple of weeks, fuelled by my passion for all things dance and, of course, pink? Well, my week was packed full of ballet classes, mesmerising theatre performances, and enough shopping sprees to make Cinderella blush. But before I dive into all that fabulousness, let's talk about the journey itself, because you know, every adventure starts with a story...
A Railway Romance
Leaving the cobbled streets of Derbyshire felt a little bittersweet, but with my trusty suitcase full of pink tulle and my heart brimming with excitement, I boarded the train from Nottingham towards St. Pancras. A delightful chap, a fellow ballet enthusiast from York, was seated across from me, engrossed in a well-worn copy of The Nutcracker. I swear, I could almost feel the rhythm of the waltz filling the carriage! The chat with him was so delightful – a shared love of dance is a powerful language, connecting souls like a graceful arabesque.
The journey from London to Paris was a smooth one. You know I adore a good train journey! Watching the scenery unfold through the windows, especially in autumn colours, is a beautiful form of ballet in itself. The flickers of golden leaves reflecting off the glass felt almost magical. I was so engrossed in watching the world pass by, it wasn't until the train reached the heart of Paris that I realised how famished I was. The scent of a delicious pastry wafting through the station got me – hello, croissants, my old friend!
Milan’s Majesty
As my high-speed train whisked me through the Italian countryside, I felt like I was transported to another world. The sun, like a spotlight on stage, illuminated vineyards and ancient villages, their terracotta roofs glistening beneath a cerulean sky. The air was crisp with the scent of woodsmoke and pine. The landscapes felt like a scene out of one of my favourite ballet stories – Giselle. The contrast between the rugged countryside and the cosmopolitan bustle of Milan city was intoxicating.
My first few days were spent at the renowned Teatro alla Scala. I'm not exaggerating, everyone knows the magic that breathes within these walls, the history in each corner. I just felt myself floating a bit higher each time I entered this magical building! This week's ballet programme had me glued to my seat; I can't even tell you how many sketches I made in my notebook. The dancers moved like graceful birds, their costumes vibrant explosions of colour that echoed the grand design of the theatre. And to think, just a week ago, I was on those streets of Nottingham, bustling with life. The city's heart vibrates with culture and creativity, something that never fails to fill my own with joy.
Speaking of the stage, this is also where my trusty notebook was invaluable! I found myself captivated by the artistry and precision of every move – you know I always jot down the inspiration! I scribbled notes about costumes and how to create more dramatic choreography with colour and shape, all within the graceful constraints of the ballet world.
Pink and All Things Ballet in Milan
Let’s get down to the nitty-gritty! Ballet is my lifeblood, my joy. I couldn’t be in Milan, with its rich artistic heritage, without experiencing all its hidden gems! On Thursday, I spent a gloriously chaotic afternoon browsing through the city's vintage clothing stores searching for those rare and perfect tutus, my passion is almost pathological! It's a bit of a cliché, I know, but some things just feel right – that perfectly aged satin, the colour of pale roses, a feather boa begging for a dramatic pirouette – those were just some of the treasures I unearthed! You just wouldn't believe some of the stories behind these pieces!
Then came the grand highlight of the week – the annual Pink Tutu Milan Ball! You guessed it, it's a glorious, fun-filled party celebrating the world of ballet and everything pink! This year, I was part of the “Dancing Queens” performance, and my outfit… I went with a blush pink tutu with an ethereal, silver beaded bodice, perfectly echoing the shimmer of the evening. The entire event was a whirlwind of laughter, elegant gowns, and swirling tutus!
For the weekend, I traded the dance floor for the Baracchina Fashion District. It was a total dream come true! This incredible area of the city is jam-packed with independent designers and creative shops. I spent hours flitting from one store to the next, marveling at the creativity on display. Imagine a haven for fashion-forward souls, a melting pot of unique designs, and that intoxicating blend of fashion and flair! This area is an inspiring kaleidoscope of trends, and it's here, surrounded by bold colours and playful fabrics, that my imagination is truly set alight. You can't possibly know how many sketches my notebook held by the end of the day!
But enough about fashion for now. Let’s get back to the real deal – ballet! After the whirlwind weekend, I was ready for a proper class. A friend suggested the Balletomania studio, hidden away in a cobblestone lane, and boy, oh boy! Talk about feeling those muscles burn, but in the best possible way! The instructor was amazing, with an elegant style and an eye for detail. We worked on pointe, and I discovered muscles I didn't even know existed!
Afterward, we celebrated with a coffee and traditional Milanese pastry in the warm glow of a nearby café. Sharing stories about our experiences, both personal and within the ballet world, with a coffee and pastry? Honestly, the perfect afternoon in a place like Milan, where life dances to its own beautiful beat.
The Magic of a Tram Ride
My final week in Milan started with an unforgettable journey on the city’s tram. I climbed aboard this yellow, rattling beauty on Sunday morning. You know I love the old tram, I’ve done quite a lot of dancing in their reflections across Europe! I found myself immersed in the charm of its historical streets. With every clanging bell and clattering wheel, I realised I had been captured by the city's magnetic pull, captivated by the sheer, unfiltered magic of Milan's heartbeat.
It is often said that when you lose yourself in a foreign city, you find yourself in return. This week was full of new discoveries – finding hidden gems, and getting lost in a labyrinth of fashion boutiques and captivating galleries. As the trams sped through the city, a thought resonated deep within: “Emma, You’ve just danced your way into a corner of your heart.
Sharing the Love
Let's face it – I live and breathe ballet, and my journey would be incomplete if I didn't share my passion with others. The excitement of sharing my journey with you all is like the crescendo of a ballet performance - that thrilling rush of emotions, shared with every single one of you! So, before I let you go, a tiny, delicious morsel to ponder... Is Milan just a mere city, or is it a reflection of our dreams? Does every step of the way inspire you to chase your aspirations?
It's that magic I aim to capture and share. My dream? It’s simple – to spread the love for dance. And, well, for all things pink, of course! To have everyone on this Earth wearing a pink tutu, not just as a costume, but as a symbol of hope, joy and boundless possibility – that’s my biggest wish! Every time I tie on my tutu, it's more than just an outfit; it’s a reminder that even the grandest dream can be achieved, step by step, pirouette by pirouette, with just a dash of confidence, a touch of grace and, yes, even a hint of pink.
Don't forget to leave a comment below - and tell me what your own dance story is. You know how much I love hearing them!
See you all next week! Until then, keep on twirling, and remember to always embrace the pink!
Yours always, Emma www.pink-tutu.com
