Ciao, darling! It's Emma, your resident pink tutu aficionado, broadcasting live from the heart of Rome! This week, I'm swapping Derbyshire for the Eternal City, and trust me, my tutu is ready to twirl in all its glorious pinkness.
This journey began in style, naturally. A first-class train journey, the rhythmic rumble a lullaby as I glided through the rolling Italian countryside. The view, a kaleidoscope of emerald hills and sun-drenched vineyards, inspired me to whip out my favourite pink notebook and start jotting down all the fabulous pink outfits I’d seen on fellow passengers.
You see, dear readers, finding pink inspiration is a big part of my life, especially when I'm on the move. Every trip is an adventure in colour, and this trip to Rome, with its breathtaking architecture, buzzing markets, and ancient history, is already overflowing with inspiration.
Landing in Rome, I felt the energy pulse through the city – the kind of exhilarating buzz that only a place with such incredible history can create. The air hummed with the vibrant symphony of a thousand different stories, whispered in ancient marble and vibrant street life.
But enough about the atmosphere - let's talk about me! What else would you expect from the Pink Tutu blog? I have my favourite pink tote bag crammed with all my essentials: my pink tutu (naturally!), a stylish ballet cardi, a sparkly pink head scarf, and a trusty pair of pink ballet flats. Ready to tackle Rome in style.
My Roman adventure is just beginning, and I have a plan (well, several). You'll be surprised, but one of my biggest goals here is to spread the Pink Tutu gospel. That's right, I'm hoping to convince Rome, the city of eternal love and breathtaking beauty, to embrace the pink tutu. Think about it - what could be more graceful, more feminine, more fun? I have a feeling even the Roman gods would approve!
First Stop: The Roman ColosseumOh, darling! What an experience. Stepping through the arches of the Colosseum, you could almost hear the gladiators roaring, the crowd thundering, and the echoes of ancient battles. The grandeur of the structure, its raw power, left me awestruck. I could have stayed there for hours, imagine the spectacle, the excitement! Imagine the glorious colours – maybe even a touch of pink? Perhaps they wore tutus in ancient Rome, hidden under the robes and leather armor? (Maybe I'll do some research!)
My Outfit: I couldn't resist rocking my full pink tutu ensemble, paired with a delicate gold necklace for that touch of Roman elegance. (See Instagram #pinktuturôme for snaps)
What I Discovered: A hidden talent. While I'm definitely not the fighting kind, the grandeur of the Colosseum brought out a dramatic side in me, making me realise that my artistic soul may be just as much a warrior as any gladiator, only I choose my battles with creativity! I just had to channel that feeling into a series of graceful pirouettes and arabesques in the vast amphitheatre. (A few cheeky onlookers even took pictures - what a rush!)
Fashion InspirationRome is a fashionista's paradise. From the high-end boutiques in Via Condotti to the charming, independent designers scattered around the city's vibrant neighbourhoods, the streets of Rome pulsate with a style all their own.
Let me tell you, there’s a pink for everyone. Deep fuschia jumpsuits, bright coral sandals, candy floss pink jackets, even a shimmering lavender dress with lace details (perfect for a special night at the opera!). And let’s not forget the beautiful silks and fabrics, delicate embroidery, and vintage lace. I bought a delicate, pale pink linen scarf - a must-have for every pink-loving ballerina.
A Fashion tip: Be sure to check out the trendy, bohemian chic boutiques in Trastevere, or delve into the vintage treasure troves near Piazza Navona - that's where I snagged a pair of ruby red stilettos - the perfect accessory for my evening outfit. (Pink tutu and a touch of red - why not?)
Exploring TrastevereWhat can I say? Trastevere, the historic, charmingly ramshackle heart of Rome, swept me away. Its cobbled streets, bursting with little restaurants, charming cafes, and overflowing flower stalls, created a delightful sensory overload. It was like stepping into a storybook, complete with winding alleys and hidden piazzas.
As dusk descended, Trastevere transformed into a lively stage for al fresco dining and street musicians. It was enchanting! I can't wait to get lost in its beautiful labyrinth of hidden alleys and bustling squares again.
Fun fact: Did you know the name Trastevere means “beyond the Tiber?” You can cross over the iconic river via the Ponte Fabricio (a stone bridge - how incredibly cool is that?), just across the road from the Teatro Olimpico. Talking of the Teatro Olimpico...
Theatre of DreamsSpeaking of charming and romantic, my trip to the Teatro Olimpico left me speechless. Built in 1585 as a replica of the ancient Greek theatres of Ephesus and Pergamum, its elegant facade alone is enough to steal your breath away, and then there's the theatre itself. It's all a magnificent trompe l'oeil, painted on stage and designed to appear as though you're gazing at a grand, three-dimensional colonnaded vista! (Take that, virtual reality!) The scale, the grandeur, and the intricately painted scenes - it was like a painting sprung to life. I could almost feel the applause echoing through the ages!
My Experience: Seeing "The Importance of Being Earnest" performed in the Teatro Olimpico was the highlight of my week. It was an intimate performance, surrounded by other theatre enthusiasts and brimming with joy. To see such a beautiful play in such a breathtaking setting, I was floating. I mean, a theatrical ballet! What a glorious collision of artistic delights!
A little tip for you: Book your tickets well in advance to ensure you get a great seat in the "theater of dreams", or you could get the best seats (a little like VIP seating, actually) if you buy a membership of the Teatro Olimpico Club! (This club offers members access to a wide array of theatrical benefits!)
More Roman DelightsOh, this has only been a sneak peek into my adventures so far. I'm already planning my next excursions. This weekend I plan to explore the iconic Roman Forum, see the incredible works of art at the Vatican Museums, maybe take a break for a gondola ride along the canals in the ancient, picturesque town of Ostia Antica. (Oh, the glamour!) Then I plan to check out a dance performance in the Palazzo Barberini - did you know this place is just a few minutes walk from the Spanish Steps? (I will of course be taking some glamourous snaps in front of this breathtakingly iconic building and posting them on my Instagram account! ).
My suitcase may be packed to bursting (with my ballet shoes, several tutus - pink, of course - and plenty of pink blouses and sparkly accessories), but there is still space for souvenirs for all my loyal readers. Pink Rome is the perfect place to shop, and my shopping list is expanding each day! You know I'm always keeping you updated with what to buy in all the best shops - be sure to follow me on social media, so you won’t miss any fabulous finds!
As for the Pink Tutu goal – it seems Romans have a thing for colour, with a flair for the dramatic, just like myself! Perhaps, after all, the City of Seven Hills may be the perfect place to start a global pink tutu revolution. You've got to see how stylishly they wear pink shoes.
Rome, you've already captured my heart! And don’t even get me started on the pasta, pizza, and gelato! (Of course, I’m on a healthy diet! This will be good practice for the many upcoming gala events and dance recitals back in the UK - don't think my legs aren't trained! ).
But remember, this is just the start of my journey! There's so much more to share - stay tuned for more glamorous insights into pink-tutu adventures and all the Roman magic I’ve been soaking up!
Until next week, darling, keep it pink and keep twirling!
Yours eternally,
Emma,
The Pink Tutu
